Panthers won't "overdraft" on O-Line

Not really. He actually said that the CB class in 2016 was very deep. That's completely opposite of saying that he doesn't like the offensive line class this year.

He was right about the CB class in 2016 being deep (2017 looks deep as well). There were 20 CBs selected in the 1st four rounds of 2016, 5 in each round, so 1 out of every 6 players selected in the first four rounds was a CB. Selected 2 of those 20 in the first four rounds wasn't that much of a reach when CB was a big need seeing as Tillman tore his ACL late in 2015, Bene was recovering from a broken leg and Norman was gone.

Again, completely opposite of what he is saying this year about the OL class, which again is correct. It is not a very good class. I expect us to take 1 or more tackles, but I just don't know when because the ones with the right size (Davenport) are projects versus the solid college guys who didn't measure well (Garcia and Lamp).

We are taking Fournette & Leggett

G-man is not just impressed with Howard, but like Rivera before him, he noted that there was some potential in general at TE and the slot receiver positions.

The more I research it the more I am convinced that Detroit will move on from Riley reiff and that we will sign him. He may not be the best but he stays healthy and his young. I'll bet we make him the highest-paid offensive tackle in the league with a 13 to 15 million dollar contract. Not because he deserves it but because of supply and demand and the fact that we have to solve the offensive tackle problem.

No one says you have to draft someone at 8 to play LT. There are lots of starting LTs who were not drafted top 10. But you have to find the talent in the draft or in free agency. So far we have done neither and  have suffered in the process. The fact we did pretty well in 2015 doesn't give me much confidence when we have largely sucked at LT since Gross left and there is no guarantee Oher will play or last 2 games into the season if he plays.

I wouldn't mind Garcia in the 4th or 5th but there's no franchise OT in this draft. People in here better sober up.

I bet you that in a couple of years when we look back at this draft the best OT will probably have been picked in the later rounds (after 2nd) or possibly an undrafted FA.

I agree that our line could use some help but throwing away picks isn't the answer.  When Oher was healthy he was a above average LT in the league.

Hindsight is 20/20 but who should we have drafted?  and instead of who?

For every David Bakhtiari, there are probably 10 players that don't work out.  How many players drafted in the last 3 years are noticeably better then Oher?

Truth is you don't know if you are throwing away picks for years. Otah was a first rounder and at first he looked pretty good but injuries eventually showed him to be a terrible pick.

Let's be real here, Oher had one or two good years in Baltimore and by the end it wasn't just the toe but mediocre performances even at right tackle. He came here and had a decent year. Now he missed almost a whole year in 2016 and his future is very tentative at best. Only a fool would put their faith in him at this point. How did he rank in 2015? I don't get  PFF premium stats but Athlon sport and life didn't have him rated in the top 20 tackles.

Yupperz. The Lions are definitely frustrated with Riley. But...They have some kids they really like. They have a decision to make for sure. Keep him and pay him to maybe be a backup. Or let him go and let the kids fight it out. If we go by Caldwells season ending presser. They may just be letting him go.

He would be an intriguing prospect. I tell ya what.

I'm glad he won't overdraft at OT, but he better be taking a long hard look at free agents.  I might throw up if I have to look at another season of Oher and Remmers protecting Cam.

Best worst case. It is Oher, and Williams. Worst case. Remmers, and Williams. Best case. Oher plays well one more year.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
