How do you grade the 2017 draft?

The 2017 draft has come and gone.  Everybody that had us picking (insert player here) at (insert round here) was either satisfied or dissatisfied.  At this point who cares right?   All and all, how do you grade this draft?  Where did we find value in certain rounds as opposed to our peers not finding value?

I think this draft was an A, and here's why.

Its because we got both McCaffrey and Samuel

If you did it all over again, draft our same draft and take all the same people except exchanging Samuel for (whoever your 2nd round crush was) then this is a completely different topic.

We just drafted 2 play makers that even make OUR head coach wonder how to defend on the opposite side.  Richardson wants to get cam help.  Gettleman wants to make it happen by drafting offense,  so best way to do that is figure out who you can draft that confuses your own head coach.  That was the whole goal of the entire draft.

Then add on the fact that we got Moten, and Elder at a steal at 5.

I've honestly never seen panthers fans more excited about a draft than this one, and for good reason.

buckle up for 2017 guys.

I'm irrationally happy at this draft. We hit on all phases of the game and the top two rounds solidified evolution.

No poo.

After proofreading I'm waiting for the inevitable "The whole point of the 2017 draft was not to confuse Ron Rivera" comment :/.

A-

While I like Samuel and McCaffrey.  I would have preferred McCaffrey and Obi.  or McCaffrey and Njouku.

Njouku would have been phenomenal with McCaffrey and we'd have that tandem for years.  I like Samuel but the thought of Njouku and McCaffrey sound better to me.

All in all it was a great draft.

B-. A little skeptical of how we will use McCaffery and can't get very amped about Samuels. I think we did get some good depth/special teams guys later. I would have probably made some different moves but it looks like we valued attempting to add more weapons on offense above anything else.

Not overly excited about all the picks. Hope that at least our early round guys end up as impact players down the road.

Initial reaction: B+

Why? While I love McCaffrey and evolution, and the positionless draft we had, I feel like the strategy every year is not BPA. Rather, DG finds his fav targets, and falls in love with them, and then grades them higher than anyone else. That way when he reaches on every single pick, he can say "We got the guy highest on our board". Well, when you are the only one who rates the kid that high, of course he's still available at your pick. This way, DG is never disappointed with his draft picks. While others are left scratching their heads at why we picked these guys so high, or even traded up for them.

I give it a B-

Would have preferred

1) Barnett DE

2) Samuel WR

2) Moton OT

3) Douglas CB

4) Davenport OT

5) Decoud S

6) Hodges TE

7) Hood HB

I would rather have the best pass rusher in the draft over CMC. I dont value RBs that high and think a good OL can allow you to plug in lesser RBs and be successful.

Now, I do like CMC and think he can be a versatile weapon for us. However, then I realize we have Shula for OC and well, most of my optimism is killed.

This may be my favorite post-draft analysis of all the dozens I've read over the past few days!

A draft that confuses your own head coach so that he can't figure out how to defend against your own offense.

Just love it!

But yes. it was pretty fun to hear Ron talking in the post-draft presser about "As a defensive coordinator, what am I gonna do if...."

It's clear he's very excited about the challenge our O can present to other defenses and all the different looks and mismatches to throw against opposing Defenses.   So cool.  When a defensive guy like Ron gets this excited about OFFENSE, it's a very good thing in my book!

    • Fowler: Bucs 23, Panthers 16. Baker Mayfield only won a single game when he was an unimpressive Carolina starter, but somehow he’s 5-0 when playing AGAINST the Panthers. For the Panthers to pull off this upset, they’ll need to score at least in the mid-20s. With Tampa Bay relatively healthy following a mini-bye (and Mike Evans’ return is huge), it feels like this will be too tough a task. Kaye: Bucs 24, Panthers 20. The win-loss-win-loss streak comes to an end. It’s hard to trust the play-calling following the loss to the New Orleans Saints. The Panthers know what’s on the line, but they also knew last week, too. It’ll be close; I just have trouble trusting a positive outcome after a defeating one on the road. Zietlow: Panthers 38, Bucs 35. This prediction goes against conventional wisdom, but then again, conventional wisdom doesn’t seem to apply to these Panthers. This group, after all, has yet to lose back-to-back contests since Weeks 1 and 2. I think they win this one to make Week 18 interesting — and yes, that’s even with motivated Baker Mayfield and future Hall of Famer Mike Evans in good form. Why not?
    • Sam developed into a different player after he mostly sat for a year and learned a ton by being in that QB room under Shannahan in San Francisco.  Then he went to the Vikings who have a poo load of talent and another genius level offensive mind at HC in Kevin O Connel. I think they genuinely built up his confidence in a way he never did in New York or Charlotte.  He would not have been the same player if he stayed here IMO. Especially if he had been involved in that disaster season with Frank Reich in 2023, that might have cooked his confidence for good.  I guess you could argue we wouldn't have been that bad if we also kept cmc and dj i guess.
    • Willis was impressive last night given the circumstances. GB and SF seem to just have it figured out as far as QB goes.   It's frustrating, but I enjoy seeing our old players find success elsewhere.
