Carolina Panthers: Drafting Dwayne Jarrett

There's a long list of supremely athletic wide receivers who tear apart college fields and then disappoint in the NFL.

But there are different levels of disappointment, and former USC stud Dwayne Jarrett went with the one where he pretty much didn't exist in the NFL at all after being a top-50 pick.

The Carolina Panthers selected him with their 45th overall pick in 2007. That was one spot before the Pittsburgh Steelers took linebacker LaMarr Woodley, who went on to have a solid nine-year career while recording three double-digit-sack seasons.

Jarrett was billed as a large, looming target at 6'4" who could excel in the red zone. The evidence of that was his 41 touchdown receptions over only three seasons for USC.

But by taking him so early, the Panthers chose to ignore a glacially slow 40-yard dash time. Jarrett posted times of 4.62 and 4.67 at his pro-day workout, and for most that raised concerns about his ability to separate consistently.

The Panthers pushed aside those fears and were rewarded with a receiver who caught only 35 balls for 428 yards over four years.

I wouldn't put Jarret as our biggest mistake.  How about the entire 2010 draft?  How about franchising Hardy?

Yeah it's a toss up between franchising Hardy and not finding a way to keep Smitty. I seriously think he may have willed us to win SB50 had he been there playing for us

How the hell was franchising Hardy a mistake? That was a no-brainer and was not a bad decision. League screwed us over big time that year.

As for Smitty, y'all know damn well it was a locker room move. It sucked major ass but it had to be done for Cam.

yeah, that 20/20...

just like Josh, no way the Panthers were gonna pay what he wanted.

But, out of the 3, (Hardy, Norman, and Smith) Id go with Smith, cuz I really do think something could have been worked out. ego/politics vs future/past.

Because of the way it turned out, no different than a draft bust.  Seems like a good idea, but it didn't work.  But fair enough to say he was producing on the field, and seemed to have turned the corner off the field.

The argument about not signing him to a long term contract before franchising him is a good point though.  Could have been worse.  The E. Brown fiasco is also pretty bad.

Our biggest mistake was not getting a legit playmaker at receiver opposite Smitty for several years. Sure, we half-assed it with the likes of Jarrett and Colbert, etc., but we never got it done and the window to maximize Smitty closed.

Jarrett ain't even close.

Richardson purging the roster in anticipation of what would be a strike year and then keeping John Fox on too long is a franchise wide mistake leading to what us fans had to endure in 2010.

A missed 2nd round pick is inconsequential in the big picture.

Biggest mistake was Sean Gilbert.

period end of discussion.

"in the last 10 years"

2-14 was the most god awful year. 1-15 at least looked capable of scoring and put up some decent fights.  But that Clausen season was one of the worst things I've endured as a sports fan.

If you merge Moore, Clausen, & St. Pierre: 2600 passing yards, 9 TDs, 21 INTs.

It however led to Cam so I'm going with Everette Brown.  We used a first to trade up in the 2nd.
