How does it feel to be a true Hornet fan ?

First, let me say that I pretty much only watch the NBA during the playoffs (or when I'm absolutely bored and channel surfing, which is very very seldom). I am really a fan of players and coaches and not necessarily teams except for the Spurs. That being said, I do support the Hornets as they are a North Carolina team---the "home" team, if you will.

The problem is I don't see any way that they will credibly compete for a championship (because they really haven't come close in franchise history). Gone are the days of Grand Ma Ma and Dell Curry, but even then one would be hard pressed to really believe. Unless they happen to draft a legitimate, and I mean legitimate, superstar that wants to be here, I can't see it. I go from year to year in June saying "Perhaps this is the year," but reality sets in during December.

Well, perhaps this is the year that they at least become credible. Monk was arguably the best pure shooter in the draft. Can he create his own shot---break 'em down and break some ankles to be a legitimate point guard or 2-guard? We will see. Bacon may be underrated. We will see. Does the other Superman in Charlotte have enough juice to make a credible run and get the Hornets over the hump. I don't know.

It's just hard to believe that the Hornets will actually become truly relevant when you look at their history, and that has to really suck as a hardcore fan.

No one is saying theyre going to win a championship this year or next or next or next. This is the fuggn NBA. And how it works in the NBA is its always only 3-5 teams that are taken seriously for a 3-5 year run. You need one of those 3-5 best players in the league.

Right now, we just want to see improvements, good decisions making and attracting some legitimate stars.

Cleveland, GSW, and even the KG's Boston teams had long droughts before winning championship(s).

At least, we're not a team like Orlando and Pheonix. Always drafting in the top every year and unable to land anyone.

Phoenix has a really nice core of young players. They could be really good in a couple years. Orlando is a dumpster fire.

Im a very light hornets fan but dont get that confused with being fairweather.

I dont watch many games at all. When i do, its a grainy illegal stream online i an barely get to work. If the damn nba would be more accessable...

that said, hornets are my #1 team through and through. There are no others. I became a bobcats fan right around 2011 because they are  in charlotte and i needed something to help out with my panthers obsession. I dont claim to know much but im a true fan, bought bobcats merch and went to a bobcats game and so did i with the hornets

I watch probably 85%-95% of Hornets games even during Bobcat days. I am a Hornets fan and Panther fan. Yes, the Hornets don't have a chance to win the Championship but they can entertain me and provide me with enjoyment. Am I happy with the possibility of just reaching round 1 or round 2 in the playoffs? Yes, bc that means we have a competitive team and I get to watch good basketball and cheer for my team.

NFL will always be #1 for me bc of the "On any give Sunday" one team can win. To win a best of 7 series, you need to be the best team so it's harder to have a chance, but that won't take away from me watching all of the games that I can.

Just no more trades for players like Miles Plumlee. And no more Cash for 2nd round picks. PLEASE!!!

I started listening to the Hornets on the radio from day one. Went to UNCC and went to quite a few games while I was there. Lost most interest in the NBA when they moved to New Orleans (MJ retiring didn't help either). I was really stoked when Charlotte got another team and even more so when we got the 'Hornets" name back. I've really lost hope, however, that MJ can ever put together the pieces to build a contender.

Bender and Chriss are TBD.

Booker is the only real star for them. Jackson could be a real stud. However, theyre a long way behind. Especially in the West. More than likely, theyll be in the high lottery again next year. And probably year after that.

Might be the best way forward for them. Bender, Chriss, Booker, Jackson, even Ulis could be rounding into form by the time the Warriors start breaking up.

The NBA didn't even have sense enough to have its own stream of the draft on its website. Their link was via ESPN. Even dumber, they didn't have a stream from their app. Not that NFL Now is without technical problems, but at least they had the live draft. I looked at the draft via the browser on my PS4. It's no wonder that with the same super teams year after year, and less of a practical presence on social media and the Internet, that the NBA trails the NFL in viewership by a marked margin.

If Charlotte didn't have an NBA team I would not watch pro basketball.

The NBA is the only major sports league that has no parity. Who would have thought the Panthers would have made the Super Bowl a couple years ago, who had the Predators in the Stanley Cup Finals this year, did anyone project an Indians vs. Cubs matchup in the World Series last year? Probably not!

But at the beginning of the NBA season everyone predicted a Warriors/Cavs final. There is absolutely no parity.

Since 2010 (2009 for MLB)

NFL: 12 different teams have made the Super Bowl

NHL: 11 different teams have made the Stanley Cup Finals

MLB: 11 different teams have made the World Seeie

NBA: 8 different teams have made the NBA Finals

The NBA is the only major sports league where there is a greater than 50% chance that you will see at least one team in the finals that you've seen there in the last 7 years.

I particularly pull for the Hornets because of the pride I have for Charlotte and because I like the game of basketball. But it does suck knowing before the season even starts that we don't have a shot a championship.

That's because that douche Dookie Silver is the worst Commisioner in sports.

That stats will probably be cut in half for the NBA if you looked at how many teams actually won a championship since 2010.

I mean hell, you can pretty much narrow down the next 3 championships to the Warriors, Spurs, Lebron's team, Boston and maybe the rockets if they can add another star. What's even worse about the NBA is you can have somebody like Westbrook or Harden on your team and not even be a contender. That's why all the stars team up

Philly has a better young core than Pheonix right now. And i dont see Philly winning a title in the next 5 years unless they add a veteran star player.

Minnesota made the best move so far by adding Butler with Wiggins and Towns. I still dont think they can win one in the next 3 years. Its hard to win a championship in the NBA. It really is. Its harder than what people think. Thats why the last three years, its been the same two teams in the finals.

Its been the Lakers and Spurs since 1999.

You dont see teams like 04' Detroit and 11' Dallas very much.

Look at the Clippers with CP3, Blake, Jordan and Crawford. They also have a damn good HC. Havent got out the 2nd round of the playoffs yet and now look like the core is breaking up.

Clippers had a great starting 5 with absolutely no depth behind them and Griffin had injury problems.

Agree that the Timberwolves had a nice young core that will benefit from adding Butler but they won't compete with the Warriors/Spurs for a few years.

Philly's young core is just as much of a mystery as Phoenix's. Embiid has been great while healthy but he can't seem to make it more than 30 games without getting shut down injury-wise. Simmons and Fultz have yet to take the floor, Saric has little experience, and Okafor is a complete liability on defense.

In the same vein, Booker has proved himself to be a potential star and Ulis is a decent 6th man. Chriss and Bender are basically unknowns at this point.

I think the 76ers ultimately will have the edge because of how much tougher the West is than the East but I agree that neither will compete for the next few years.

    • The bottom line is we saw long stretches this season where T-Mac wasn't even targeted.  He had games where he went an entire half without seeing a pass thrown his way, and it lead to a bunch of games with 5 or less targets.  If he's healthy and we're not up a stupid amount and only running the ball, I can't see him having more than a game or two next year with 5 or less targets. We were also only 22nd this year in pass attempts, and that was with a rookie #1 and no legitimate 2nd option for half the season.  And even then, we were only 46 pass attempts above 31st place. If we go into next season with T-Mac improved in his 2nd season and a healthy Coker for 17 games, there is absolutely no reason for us to not throw it more.  That right away increases both of their target totals without sacrificing any targets from each other or other players, add in them taking targets from the TEs and RBs on top of that, and your argument just doesn't hold water anymore. You can't look at targets/yards in a vacuum and think next year Coker just takes some from T-Mac.  You have to look at the team as a whole and our situations this year and then project what will happen next year. If he's healthy for 17 games, I'd bet my life savings that T-Mac sees increases across the board, targets/catches/yards/TDs.   Just as Coker will also see career highs in all categories, it's not one vs the other, it's shifting offensive strategy given our personnel, which next year will be much better for our passing game (QB issues aside).
    • C'mon now.... First, you can't switch up your argument once someone points out a major flaw in your point. You're saying we shouldn't expect a big increase in targets/yards for T-Mac, but then shift to talking about averages with Chase when I point out the significant leap he took there once you factor in his missing games.  He saw an increase in targets in 5 less games, averages aside, he saw a significant increase in targets in his 2nd season, what he then did with those targets is actually irrelevant in this discussion. Puka seeing no increase is pointless, as he saw such an absurd amount of targets for a rookie, it's near impossible to see an increase. But the real issue in this post is that you think I'm proving your point by showing how Waddle had to share targets with Hill. Tyreek Hill was a 1st team All Pro who was 2nd in the NFL in yards that season. If you think Jaylen Waddle sharing targets with a 1st team All Pro and a future HOFer is even remotely in the same category as T-Mac needing to share targets with Coker... then you are certifiably insane, lol. If anything, you could make the argument that Coker is to Waddle as T-Mac is to Hill in that discussion (which would then lead to a serious increase in targets/yards for T-Mac).  But even that is insane, as neither T-Mac or Coker will be as good as Hill and Waddle respectively that season.  I love both of their potential, but c'mon now, T-Mac isn't getting 119 catches for 1,700 yards and Coker isn't getting 117 for 1,350 next season.
