"I had my ups and downs. Gotta get better," Butler said recently. "It was an OK year, but this year will be better – I'll tell you right now."

I believe him. The people who think this was a wasted pick will change their minds when Star or KK come out and you can't tell the difference.

lol after that fiasco with training camp Funchess last off season, I'll believe it when I see it in a regular season game . Right now him and Rivera are blowing steam.

So you think Butler and Wilks are lying to us? Do you expect every player to stay exactly the same as they were as rookies? If you're going to be this pessimistic, then why even bother coming here to talk about your favorite team?

Oh there was plenty of proof in Butler's last few games that he's progressing at near the same level KK did his rookie year.

It's not steam when it's been seen on the field already.

Yeah, people forget that KK didn't exactly set the league on fire as a rookie and he was healthy for all of his rookie season, if I remember correctly.

@Hoenheim Here's some examples you can see:

Vernon Butler's first step is lightning quick. Later in the season, Butler took that skill to the house. Against the Redskins, watch as Butler initiates a very fast first step, rendering the center unable to keep up and let Butler go in to stop the play.

Butler has been inconsistent in the run game, but when he's on, he's extremely good. Watch as he blasts back a defender and ram himself right into the runningback for a loss.

Just the fact that Butler blocked two field goals as a rookie who wasn't even at 100% should tell you about his athleticism. Also,  the fact that he is working so hard this off season should put more pressure on Star to perform too; especially if he wants to get paid. Competition makes them all better.

I'm just glad Panthers.com put this up because everybody has been focusing on the offense but this defense has a chance to be better than the SB team too. This should be a solid unit at all three levels.

My main concern is his health. His biggest knock coming into the NFL was his lower body strength and getting a high ankle sprain your first year does not smother those flames. Obviously he has plenty of time to grow but he needs to put on a lot of muscle while not sacrificing any of his speed which is his strength. That's the key to his success

You know there's no room for logic and reason in these discussions.

    • Canales up first. Guys got their legs back yesterday and started a little slow when they came out Bryce challenged them in the huddle and they responded "Dominant practice for the defense today." Praised turnovers, "beautiful hits," and being physical Praised Moehrig, Ransom, Incoom, and Jones II Confirmed playing starters. Predominantly a young team and can't pass up an opportunity. Emphasized game day routines such as nutrition, body readiness, etc. Plus it's a bunch of new guys on the defense. Bryce will start. Will play them the first two, but starters might sit for the third game depending on how practice goes that week. Nic Scourton has a mild hamstring that happened in special teams. DJ Johnson had an issue with his hip flare up and is getting checked out this afternoon. Experimenting with approach to preseason games. In Seattle they played their starters in all but the last preseason game and what Pete Carroll was looking for in terms of mental readiness to play football. Thomas Incoom has been getting a lot of work with AC Carter adding to his toolbelt. Getting better as a rusher and being physical in the run game. Looking for a consistency in response. 1pt for a win, 3pts for a TD. Defense doesn't like that, but in games if they give up one go ball the score can swing. They challenged the pass game and the run game today. Guys are getting together before, between, and after team drills to challenge each other Job of the coaching staff to set the foundation for our schemes, philosophy, and expectations of what it's like to play Panthers football. Powerful when players take that and the locker room owns it. That's when it becomes our team, their team. At the end of the day, the men on the field have to rebound from a bad play, celebrate the good plays, and keep each other in tune for a whole game. Robert Hunt is amazing. Size, talent, quickness, flexibility. Really intelligent guy that there will say himself there are technique things he needs to work on. Regardless of where players are at, there's a constant learning curve and loves that Big Rob is challenging himself with the position coach. Thinks the digital down and distance can be really valuable. Getting the information quickly will help with the flow of the game. Thought TMac looked great but there were some near misses that he'll have to get in the room and communicate with Bryce on while reviewing film. James Mitchell keeps doing right and his trust factor is increasing with the QBs. If you're right and the coverage says the ball goes there, it'll come. Had some issues at the start of camp but is trending up. Newton or Person: "It looked like today was beyond thud but short of live. What do you call that?" Canales: "No, that's thud. In my mind, that's what thud should look like. The challenge for our defensive guys is can you put your body in a position where we know that would've been a tackle." Whizzing by, tagging with two hands, etc doesn't show you whether you would've made a tackle. That's not real football. Let's the play extend because guys have to be ready to chase sometime where the ball squirts out from a pit. Can't train to say "Ah, it was a tackle" and relax but instead play with intensity through the whistle. Lathan Ransom is bringing the physical style of play that they saw on film. Has been really into the details and someone that they can count on. Has really given himself a chance to start at the other safety position. Excited for the extra energy from a game-like environment that they'll get from FanFest. Used to have four preseason games and now FanFest feels like that first one. Will give ST full speed reps to evaluate. Making plays and feeding off of the fans. Window closed quickly on the INT to finish practice. CSW baited Bryce with some movement and made a great play. Saw it from Bryce's perspective with TMac coming open. Has played all over the secondary that they can count on to speak loudly and be on the same page with his teammates.
