Scott Fowler thinks fans need a real explanation for Gettleman's firing

And if we don't hit it big these next 2 years then stuck with over the hill vets sucking up all the cap because of friends/loyalty and no room to sign FA. The young talent walks off because not enough in the pot to pass around.

Then were back to 2010 and drafting in the top 10. Maybe that'll be another stacked draft class with 75% of the top 10 will be in the hall. So we can go on a talk how Great the GM is that gets fired for poor record.......but hey he sure set up the next guy with that core franchise guy with the top pick. And he sure was a nice guy, almost a Santa to some older guys

Hope for Lambordi but history isn't in our favor.

The Panthers were back to drafting top 10 this year.

Lamordi Trophy

Is the Lamordi Trophy awarded to the team that treats its players like pampered, spoiled children and overpays them to the point of Salary Cap Hell?

I'm thinking the Carolina Panthers already have a few of those in their trophy case, right?

There isn't a good answer.

Not sure I even want to hear it.

Richardson no longer wanted Gettleman out of the building. That's the bottom line, whether we like it or not.

I don't hate Richardson for making the decision, but the move does NOT inspire confidence in our team.

I'd like a concrete answer, but what do I know

I want 89 to retire a Panther *dodges beer cans from fully diapered adult males wearing Gettleman shirts*

I don't think its that that people love Gettleman personally... its what he represents which was building a sustainable and successful team. This is the first time in the history of the franchise that anyone could accuse the panthers of doing that. His firing signals to the fans, at least to me, that winning is not important.

There has to be more to it than just his alleged dealings with TD. If JR loves TD so much, he can just write him a check, himself. I hope we can get more info but I'm not holding my breath for an official word from the panthers that means anything.

That's a lot IFs I think it's gonna be total opposite of that . We are going to win it big first of all.

we can lure FA for chance to win ring

Salary Cap is going to Rise

We have all our draft picks

We will be successful

Every team has all of those at their disposal....

Gettleman gave us a competitive advantage over most teams because he was able to scout talent, find value, and was able to maintain a cap friendly roster. We lose all of that.

I don't think he is doubting that we can win A superbowl. I think its more of a worry about our longevity and sustainability. You have a to have a plan to replace folks after they leave for more money or you have to devote significant cap space to keep people around. DG has shown that he excels in handling cap issues and bringing in key pieces at a value to the team ( ie Every free agent he signed ever).

Nah man, after we win it once, wr can sign all future HOFers to vet min contracts because they will like us so much. Plus you are forgetting that we have the unique advantage of getting more cap space to work with and also getting to draft next year... only 31 other teams can say that. derp.

Yeah, I am and always will be a big Gettleman supporter. The 89 thing didn't really bother me, ultimately he was a detriment to the future growth of the team and to be honest, 89 had no problem diminishing others and talking poo but when DG hit him with his walking papers he's the one who feels slighted. DWill-- who gives a fug. Norman, I agree with DG in the overall principle of what happened-- JNo wasn't a long term Panther, but I would have kept him on the tag for the last year.

My biggest gripe was last offseason not adding enough people.

The biggest thing to me with Gettleman is that even though ATL and Tampa have been drafting better and adding talent, we also have a guy who knows how to find talent and because of that we'd stay competitive and hopefully keep running the south. Now, that whole idea is out the window. I'm not sure we can remain competitive against those teams, because they're still rolling and now we've fallen off. There's no telling whether this could snowball into a 49er's level disaster for our team.

There's no telling that even a more mild Hurney-Gettleman crossbreed will have the eye for talent DG did, will be as inclusive with the staff in player decisions as DG was, and be as willing to take shots on flyers like DG.

Last season I could sleep ok because I knew we had DG sitting in the film room in the middle of the night and we'd find a way to fix our problems. now I'm not sure.

What eye for talent? His draft picks have been bad to mediocre, and his free agents acquisitions are two misses for every hit. The team was built by Marty Hurney.

DG was good GM but let's not act like he he was the premier standard I really don't believe he gave us that competitive advantage you speak of.

The draft is the most economical /efficient  way of replacing older and more expensive talent long as Panthers don't give away draft picks we will be able to replace players on a yearly basis as needed

Wether Ron or someone else takes on the role Panthers will be in mix of things long as we maintain the core players like Cam  & Luke who of course where scouted by Rivera.

We need front office personnel that can help Ron manage the CAP.

Look how much Bills have trusted McDermott who has never been head coach before.

    • Lol. He may not be the prototype LT but he is solid. Your takes are embarrassing. IDGAF about anything in the NCAA but prospects. Still pining for Datnold is freaking hilarious. Ickey's weakness is passprotect from speed. He is smart and has room to improve a bit in his weakness but he is a beast in the run game. That's worth more than your willing to admit. I would still take him over everything since Gross so just GTFO of here with that weak and sad take.
    • Oops. Sorry for the double post. I have been trying to finish this amid honey-do this and that for the last couple of hours.
    • First, let me say that some people aren't going to like this. Not because they don't enjoy reading a tongue-in-cheek article based on hints of truth, but because at times, this seems like a more mean-spirited version.  It also has an error regarding Tetairoa McMillan's 40 time at the NFL Combine, and the writer also somehow thinks that throwing in a standalone sentence that references Dave Canales and his past struggle with porn addiction is funny. Deadspin went through it's trials and tribulations, and many key people started and went to Defector. Defector is supposed to be an improvement, but I don't know that it is based upon this...satire? The following are snippets. On the team in general: If it still seems impossible to you that this team won five games, well, you're onto something. That mildly respectable 4-5 finish to the season only looks worse the longer you stare at it: They eked out back-to-back wins against the putrid Saints and Giants by a combined four points, and then needed overtime and a heroic Chuba Hubbard performance to beat the Cardinals. The final win of the season, Week 18's 44-38 overtime victory against a Falcons team that was trying to make the playoffs, can be counted as legitimately impressive for as long as it takes you to remember that the Falcons will always be frauds. On Dave Canales:  "Canales, meanwhile, has an alarming amount of swagger for a guy who was a few fluky late-season wins away from presiding over the worst team in the league. "The sky's the limit for this group," Canales said at the start of training camp. "This is going to be a very competitive team. I don't think people are going to want to play us by the style of football that we play. I'm expecting that." OK pal, take it easy." "The story those quotes come from is a fun read, due to how hard it strains to recast a season that was 90 percent disaster as some kind of meaningful step forward. Benching Young after Week 2, an obvious panic move that was almost certainly undertaken at Tepper's direction, is retrofitted to be "a gutsy move that defines Canales." Who needs winning seasons or division titles when you can put "Benched my QB in Week 2 and then put him back in the lineup because the other guy got injured" under the Gutsy Moves That Define Me section of a résumé. This man will have a job for life. I'm expecting that." On Bryce: "Young is entering his third season as the Panthers' starting quarterback, which is about the time you expect a guy who was drafted No. 1 overall to start demonstrating that he's capable of being the franchise savior he was selected to be. Young has 28 career starts under his belt, and it's pretty hard to find anything from those games indicating that he's going to avoid being a bust. He's thrown for more than 300 yards in a game just once, and tossed more than two TDs in a game twice. He's started 11 games in which his completion percentage was below 60 percent, and he's had 17 starts in which he couldn't crack 200 yards through the air. Beyond all that, he looks like he doesn't belong on the field. His base state is panic, he can't throw the ball downfield or to the sidelines, and he can barely hold his head upright under the weight of his helmet." On David Tepper: "David Tepper hasn't even been here for a decade and he's already threatening to go down as one of the worst owners in league history. A fanbase fully souring on an owner usually takes some time—there's a few seasons constituting a honeymoon period, then a period of excuse-making, and then the feeling starts to shift once the losing seasons and annoying quotes pile up. Tepper is an argument against the idea that familiarity breeds contempt; sometimes all you need is one look at a guy before deciding that you'd like to punch him in the face."   There's some truth here, and I'm sure that to the Negative Nancys the portrayal is spot on, but remember that this is ostensibly coming from a satirical perspective. The "truth" hurts though, and hopefully, like every season, there's still plenty of hope and optimism. At the end of the day, we just don't know how the m infusion of acquisitions and young players is going to work out.
