Has to be. He's plenty good enough to start on many teams. One other reason is his age. He's actually only 6 months younger than Olsen. He'll be 32 in two weeks. Only got one year of his 3 year extension, so he's probably looking for a decent end of career deal. Might be worth being a backup for a few years instead.

He's been the best blocking TE for a few years now, or close to it, and provides good offensive capabilities too.   I'm sure he could find a home pretty quick so not sure what's up.    I'd love to have him here so Olsen doesn't have to block.    Maybe he's just wrestling with DWill.

If we carry two kickers on the active roster I'll go nuts. If we go into Sunday switch kicking between Gano and Butker I'll be rendered into a catatonic state by he monumental stupidity.

We have to make a decision on the kicker position. If no one is offering anything in a trade, suck it up and cut one of them.

Perhaps people are overreacting and putting too much stock in the position and guys like Dickson and Manhertz can successfully fill that void. But it's not out of the question for fans to be concerned that there isn't a designated fullback on the roster when our success running the ball has leaned a lot on blocking from that position.

But you answered the fan's concerns in your first sentence above.

Dickson will essentially be our FB. And he has developed into a decent blocker.

I'm sure most would agree that blocking was not Tolbert's strength.

lol not really ED has a role and plays it very well watch him this year

Yes, he basically plays an undersized poor man's OT. Never ceases to amaze me how we essentially handicap ourselves by putting an eligible receiver on the field and rarely ever actually utilize him as such.

If you're going to use the guy almost exclusively as an extra blocker just go ahead and put an extra OT out there already. I bet Ed Dickson as a receiving threat isn't even mentioned in opponents' defensive game prep.

you probably will see both kick on Sunday until an ultimate decision is made from either screwing themselves or a trade is acquired for one of them.

This would be unprecedented levels of stupid. Teams have kept 2 active kickers in the past but every time  it has happened to my recollection there has been a FG kicker and a KO specialist, one being clearly better in one aspect but worse in the other. I don't see that between the current Panther kikckers

Dickson was not good last season, and even worse the season before. He is below average in pass and run blocking, and he has little other production as a receiver. He's easily replaceable, but keeps on surviving because apparently his position is deemed just not that important playing as a backup to Olsen.

I am somewhat intrigued by him playing a little FB (if it actually ever happens), only to see if he can actually be valuable at another position.

In fairness, during those three seasons where we won the Division and went to the playoffs, our offense ran the ball really well and utilized a fullback a large percentage of the time. Maybe the reason for that was because we had pro bowl caliber play from Mike Tolbert and built the offense to utilize him in the rushing attack, but either way, the fullback position was an important piece to the offense. Going back prior to Tolbert during the first Super Bowl run, Brad Hoover was a key piece blocking for Davis, Foster, etc.

Perhaps people are overreacting and putting too much stock in the position and guys like Dickson and Manhertz can successfully fill that void. I think we are a dedicated running team.  Take Cam out of the equation and our running numbers are quite pedestrian.  Tolbert basically mailed in last year at the FB position.  I'm hoping that without the fullback we can incorporate some different designs/blockin schemes that are reliant on Cam getting touched.

Veteran pickups tend not to happen until after week one so that teams can avoid having to guarantee their full salary.

Sadly, if we have Gano on roster as of Saturday, his full salary will be guaranteed for the year.

Fixed again because I think one of the rule changes this year is that by 4pm on Saturday teams have to set the active roster. No more "Game Time" decisions.

I think you'll find designations for inactive/active are still on gameday 90 minutes prior to kickoff

Funny how some view the angry over not having a true FB on the roster as over-exaggerated or comical.  Maybe those are also the huddlers who wanted Dickson cut before even the Draft took place that are now defending him saying hes actually good now... that's funny.

Dickson is at best an average TE.  Now rotating positions and people are defending it.  We run a power run scheme that excels with a blocking fullback.  If Dickson can get the job done fine, but don't blow him up on being good when majority wanted him cut and CAP save.
