Do you trust Jerry to hire another head coach?

I know at one point guys on here were talking about wanting him, what would you guys think if we were to talk Jim Harbaugh into coming back to the NFL as out coach. I know he is a bit crazy but would certainly be a change from stoic, it's execution not play calling, Ron Rivera.

After what happened the last time he was in play?  Not likely.

Refresh my memory real quick what you are referring to. I'll admit I haven't really followed much about Harbaugh in a while. Just seen his name of a list of possible head coaching candidates in the NFL for 2018 and remembered he had a bit of a following around here.

If I said Jerry Richardson was an incompetent buffoon that would be disrespectful to actual incompetent buffoons everywhere.

Jerry Richardson should litterally have zero say on anything Carolina Panthers. He's embarrassed us enough and if he has any say in our next head coach, we will be in serious trouble.

please sell

The story was that we reached out to him during our last head coaching search and he laughed at our offer.

The Panthers official statement was that they were  never interested in Harbaugh. Jerry Richardson made some comment like "I'm sure he's a nice guy" or something. It came off kind of snarky. That may not have been intentional but the damage was done regardless.

Darin Gantt ended up "reassigned" off the Panthers beat when he continued to insist that we had indeed contacted Harbaugh while the team denied it.

So yeah, that was a mess.

Team officials insisted they had nothing to do with what happened to Gantt,  but to this day he still seems to hold a bit of a grudge.

Wasn't the Bears' offense useless though?

Game would've been a tie had it not been for our turnovers. Or they'd hit another big pass play and score and beat us by 7. Point being, when you dominate TOP and lose by 14 in a game where the opposing QB completes 4 passes, having a defense that performed that well isn't going to get you a win if you're not scoring on offense.

Ah okay, yeah that might be an issue if then. Oh well, it was just a thought. Out of curiosity what kind of candidates would you be interested in from college and the pros?

I guess I'm just confused by what you're saying because the Bears D performed well and got them a win when they weren't scoring on offense.

Yeah, a D can get you a win if you somehow score points. Be it by the offense, turnovers, special teams. But when you're unable, in any way to put points on the board, it's ultimately on the offense as to why you lost that game and that has consistently been an issue with us, historically. So having a great D =/= playoff contention. That is the philosophy we've tried to live by. Have a great D, score 17 points and win by less than 7, get to the playoffs.

When a D can force turnovers and turn that into points themselves, that's a bonus. As long as the D is getting the other team's offense off the field, that is all that can be asked or expected. So people gripe that we're not getting turnovers. Not a problem so long as we're not committing them ourselves. Winning the turnover battle is what you want, and breaking even is fine. But it's not the defense's fault if the offense is just blowing it all game, over several games.

So, in conclusion, a great D means NOTHING if your offense can't produce. Save for 2 games, this offense cannot produce. It starts with the coaching and philosophy. Until we prioritize putting up more points than the opponent, this is what we will have. Consistently good to elite defense with an average to terrible offense. Hovering around 7-9 on average.
