We were over the 2018 salary cap prior to the trade

The theory of this being a factor only works if the trade was planned and initiated by us.

It wasn't.

If the Bills hadn't called us, Benjamin would still be here.

That does not mean that it was not one of the things that factored into the final decision. We just do not know.

Do you really think the FO will have the guts make the cuts you're advocating? With the possible exception of Colin Jones, all of the guys you cited are "Hurney's guys" and have been rewarded by him in the past with large extensions during his previous GM stint.

I was surprised to see that Thomas Davis has a $10 million dollar cap hit for next year. I would love to see him finish his career here. If we could part ways with, or significantly reduce the salary of, the guys you cited above we should be able to absorb that for 1 more season. But man, 10 mil for a 35 year old LB is pretty steep.

I know these are Hurney guys and all, but Ryan Kalil can't get on the field and Stewie might have lost a step.  I love CJ, but he's just not productive.  We've got guys waiting in the wings (Larsen, CAP, Hall) plus 4 picks in the first 3 rounds.  I'd rather re-sign Stah than watch Ryan Kalil stand on the sideline like a damn statue each week.

I'm not advocating cutting TD despite the obvious overpay.  Just wish we hadn't done the extension to begin with.  We could have waited until the end of the season, then offer him a contract, but you know, hurt feelings/disrespect.

That was not your earlier argument.  I am sure he did not discuss everything there.. Just saying it could have been a consideration...not the main one.

Unless Hurney is a complete buffoon, he would definitely consider the ramifications on the cap.  But to say as much might send a negative signal to the team.  "Its a business" doesn't usually sit well with players.  No reason to admit it.

Keep believing that.

Both Marty Hurney and Brandon Beane have confirmed the details around how this trade happened, and their stories match up.

You can build a tinfoil hat theory if you want, but to do so you have to contradict the statements of the two principal characters, neither of whom has any reason to lie about it.
