he's a deer in headlights, and has been for a long time.

@ZaximusOut of curiosity how would you describe the following coaches (with rivera being "a deer in headlights")

Dirk Koetter/Marvin Lewis/Adam Gase/Jason Garret/Vance Joseph/Jay Gruden/Jack Del Rio/John Harbaugh

I am really interested in your perspective.

Just watched the presser. In fairness to Rivera, the comment was regarding the recent personnel changes, not the whole offense identity thing. Clearly, TOP via the run game is a big thing to him, but he complimented Shula on opening the play book with more misdirection, PA, reverses, etc., and wants to see the ball spread around with occassional deep shots. To top it off, he wants more TE involvement besides blocking. Sanjay should be ecstatic.

So any time one of our starters goes out for a game or two and someone steps up its all "new".

Ok

Technically it's new for AT LEAST three people. The new #1 (route tree) the new #2  (route tree) and the QB adjusting to the timing of the new #1 running the existing route tree.

not an argument just nature of the game.

Ok

The guys being asked to fill these roles that Benji left are all somewhat new to those positions.

Funch has never been a full time 1

Shepard is now seeing an expanded role for first time in career

Samuel is still learning the position

You guys are just looking for anything to bash Rivera now and it’s honestly sad. He obviously means that they are just starting to get use to life without Kelvin and with the new first year guys

would you rather have him say they are exactly where they need to be? Because clearly they aren’t yet

Preach

Most of those guys are fairly new. Rivera isn't.

Marvin Lewis probably should have been fired years ago but the Bengals are a terrible organization. Del Rio's Raiders are struggling this year but looked better than us last year even though they've got the distraction of the Las Vegas thing.

John Harbaugh? Yeah, his team has had a rough time lately but he's got a ring and has fielded numerous contending teams. Rivera is not in his league.

Oh I wasn't asking for a comparison to Rivera, I just wanted perspective. 5 of the 8 are tenured coaches.... VJ -DK- AG were revered coordinators before taking their gigs. However, their teams have taken U-Turns.

The reason I bring up JH is that he hasn't had a winning season since 2014 (.625).

One interesting note about all of those head coaches (we can include many more)... outside of JH - 0 playoff wins. It's one thing to get to the playoffs but to win? That is a whole different level of coaching.

I will take Rivera over these coaches any day. Because believe me... the Huddle would be torn down if these guys were our coaches.

I'm not that big a fan of Lewis or Del Rio but Rivera over John Harbaugh? That is some major homerism

Doesn't surprise me that you're a guy who enjoys twisting RR's words around and then bashes the media for doing the same thing to Cam.

Because there was some contractual requirement, pre-trade, to center the passing game around “#1 WR” Kelvin Benjamin right?

They were unable in every way to “evolve” to what they are supposedly doing now earlier in the season right?

    • This.  He knows where the seam is about to open, cuts, and accelerates hard. He’s slippery and tacklers always seem to be taking awkward angles to get to him. No dancing. Runs low and powerful. Almost never goes backwards for a loss. We’ve rarely had the guy who bounces off of tacklers. It’s nice seeing another one.
    • I can't speak for others but yes I read it. The conclusions are based heavily around the use of the statistical metric DYAR created by football outsiders and used by ESPN for this article. It only includes players whose production began in 2000. But excluding HOF running backs who produced BIG in an iteration of the NFL that was not yet catered to making things much easier for offenses in order for them to prop up more recent candidates is rather absurd and seems like just playing favorites regardless of where one might fall on their opinion of the use of the metric in question.
    • Same thing I first thought but then I saw it was against Jacksonville and took about half a second of playing to know. I was at that game.  I can't tell you my level of excitement when I saw it was Delhomme instead of Peete who came out for the 2nd half. Delhomme has and will probably always be my favorite Panther.
