It's funny to hear huddlers talk about audibles

There's something that's about the Panther's fanbase that's been been bothering me for a while now. There's a narrative that Shula will call a play then Cam will get to the line and audible out of Shula's shitty call into something he wants to run. Cam is apparently fixing all of Shula's mistakes.

Problem is....that's not how audibles work in the NFL. At all.

As a NFL QB, unless you are PFM or TB12, almost every option you have available to you pre-snap was designed as part of the week's game plan.

Each week, the OC & his staff will put together a gameplan consisting of a very small number (~40) of plays from the playbook, choosing plays that his team has executed well and fit what he's seen the opponent's defense do. For those plays, there will be built in audibles and checks. These are determined by opponent and change from week to week. Plays not in the gameplan are not practiced during the week and generally considered off limits as coaches don't want to overload their players.

So when Cam goes to the line and changes the play to a bubble screen to Funchess, that audible was something that the OC built into the original call to take advantage of a specific defensive look he saw on film. Cam is following Shula's instructions.

I'm not sure if we do this, but some teams will go as far as giving the QB three plays every-time they line up and the QB will choose the right play to run based on the defensive look. Once again, all this is designed by the OC ahead of time.

TL;DR: QB's aren't out there fixing OC's mistakes when they audible, they are doing exactly what the OC is telling them to do.

Well by nature the QB is only going to audible with the different options available in the set and playbook. No QB is going to is going to change the formation and create their own play, with incorrect personnel on top of that.

Yeah I thought this was understood. Did the OP really believe QBs did that?

Man the reading comprehension here is fuging awful. Its like I'm in a remedial 3rd grade classroom.

There are about 40 TOTAL plays that are practiced each week and those are (generally) the only plays that will be called or run during the game.

There are 1000+ plays in given playbook.

Cam isn't changing the play at the line to anything other than the 40 plays in that weeks gameplan. Really though, there's only going to be a couple different things he can do with any given call, and those options are all set in advance.

Naked bootleg that Cam called? Yeah it was his decision. But it was a decision that the OC gave Cam the ability to make. Ie: if you see the Falcons do this on D when we make this call, you can check to the naked bootleg. QBs aren't out there making it up as they go along.

It was a brilliantly designed play. Maybe it came from Chud's book or someone else's, but it doesn't matter. Very few plays are truly original for any given OC.

But the OP is correct, it doesn't matter if Cam audibles, Shula deserves credit as well.

I thought he called a great game last night.

The worst coaches in the league sometimes make brilliant decisions.

The best coaches in the league have been known to do things that were unforgivably stupid.

No player, coach, GM, owner or anything else is all good or all bad. You have to be able to judge on balance and in relation to their peers.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
