Voth discusses the Shula firing

...and confirms that Rivera was being urged to make this move last season.

After 2016’s 6-10 finish, Rivera was under internal pressure to make a coordinator change. But staunchly loyal and firmly positive, he believed Shula could navigate personnel tweaks to make the offense thrive like it did in 2015. That evolution never happened as the Panthers struggled to establish an identity this season.

Sometimes the passing game worked. More often than not, it didn’t.

The running game finished inside the top five, but it was again largely dependent on Newton’s legs.

The Panthers would too often follow a dominant drive with quarter long-plus stretches that featured few yards and multiple three-and-outs.

Why the Panthers moved on from Mike Shula

Have to wonder what could have been if he'd have made this move a year ago.

That’s what I said in another post.

Ron got pushed, maybe even a deal over his extension. Also his extension is 2 years not more.

that indicates to me that he was put on a short leash too, told to make a move to get it, and it had better get better.

Thats whats crazy to think about, even with our quarter + long droughts...we were still able to put up 24-31 points regularly in the past 3 years...can you imagine a consistant offense?  30+ per game should be no issue with solid OC calling and execution.

Seems pretty clear from Voth's comments (and others by Scott Fowler) that Rivera had come to believe Shula didn't know how to properly use Christian McCaffrey.

Well if it was clear to fans he didn't I mean...

He was pretty late to the party on that one— pretty much everyone called that the day he was drafted.
