Random Norv Stuff

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

FACTS:

- Turner was born in North Carolina (Camp Lejeune, to be specific) but grew up in California and went to college at Oregon.

- Turner played quarterback in college, backing up a young fellow by the name of Dan Fouts (wonder if he'd bring Dan in to talk to the team sometime).

- Norv and Panthers head coach Ron Rivera have the same middle name (Eugene).

- Rivera and Turner both come from military families (Norv's dad was a Marine).

- Turner's mom raised Norv and four siblings (including Panthers consultant Ron) by herself from the time he was two.  Dad one day just "got on a bus and left".

- Mrs Turner raised her brood of five while suffering from multiple sclerosis. His sister has since developed the disease as well.  Norv now does a lot of work for MS charities.

- Norv credits his mom with instilling in him both a strong work ethic and a clear sense of right and wrong.  Also says she never complained or felt sorry for herself.

- Turner has been coaching since 1975 (I was eight years old) and coaching at the pro level since 1985 (the year I graduated high school).

- In his pro coaching career, Turner has been part of ten different NFL staffs.

- Ron Rivera has called Turner one of the best offensive minds he's ever seen.  He's been trying to get Norv here since before Mike Shula even got the OC job but Turner chose Cleveland.

- Turner describes his season in Cleveland as "a total mess" and stated that "things were going nowhere and it was a bunch of people trying to save themselves at the end."

- He calls the decision to walk away from the Vikings "the hardest one he's ever made" and said he would only come back for "a special situation".

- When Norv left the Vikings, son Scott remained employed there as the quarterback coach.  Scott later took a job working with Jim Harbaugh at Michigan.

- Turner coached against Harbaugh's father Jack at the college level (Turner as USC, Harbaugh at Stanford) and is friends with both Jim and John.

- Norv says he's not allowed to take anymore head coaching jobs in the NFL because his wife would kill him if he did.

- Troy Aikman confirms that Norv has indeed been in Charlotte over the past few days because he called to talk to him about the rumors.

QUOTES:

“Quitting is never an option. I don't care how things go. It's not something I'd ever think of doing. You go out and play. I don't care who you are, there are no guarantees in those games.”

"If you're going to be successful – if you're going to make it through the things you're going to have to go through – you better understand that you have to commit to something and you have to commit to it 100 percent and do what it takes.”

“People want to talk strategy, scheme, philosophy, but this game is not about X's and O's and strategy. Those things are critical, they're important, but I think most teams in this league are sound in what they do strategically. You have to get a bunch of guys together who really enjoy playing the physical part of this game.”

"The best quarterbacks are those who do not flinch, who will stand their ground to the last second, who will make their throw and take their shots, get hit right in the chin, get flattened and get up and not think anything of it.”

Yeah I think we can fit Cam into this Category.  Just rather he NOT get hit so often.

The thought of getting a little more vertical with Cam is going to be fun.

If we can consistently give Cam time to throw 2018 could be fun.

There's a full article linked above about that situation.

The gist of it was that Zimmer wanted to use a more West Coast approach with Bridgewater while Turner wanted to stick with the Coryell. Zimmer kept interfering in the offense till Turner basically said "screw it".
