Wilks as a Head Coach?

To the dismay of many Panther fans Wilks might be back.

According to this article on CBS Sports Wilks is a candidate for only two of the remaining four vacancies. (One if as someone posted earlier that he wouldn't interview for Colts)

Colts and Cardinals.

So if Wilks comes back does he reflect and make his defense less predictable?

His plays do suck at times but I'm more interested in fixing the secondary that Gettleman ruined.

Agreed, we need to address the backend but do you do it via free agency or count on a 3rd or 4th round pick?

My question is? Why does he insist on laying 10-15 yds off receivers when they blitz?  We were the top blitzing team in the NFL but apparently we did nothing to disguise we were coming or not.  McDermott seemed to be much better at this trait than Wilks.

I wonder if he will evaluate how he approaches this.

Our secondary is "ruined" because the front 4 cannot get pressure without constant help

So, if you are gonna have safety blitzes, corner blitzes and LB's all rushing the passer, the back end immediately is on their own.

This is why Brees takes us apart, same with Ryan.  They are smart and know immediately where the pressure is coming from and how to expose that area of the field.

Get a pass rush and you once again make he secondary better

CJ and Peppers need to retire and I hope we can find a diamond in the rough the first round of the draft

1. I like Wilks blitzing, as I like a more aggressive defense.   More aggressive than McDLT...replace Coleman and Johnson and we have a very good defense

2. I wonder if when the Wilks interview tour is over (Rooney) if Rivera still wants him...defense took a significant drop 2nd half of season.  Ron may still be in house cleaning mode

CJ is most definitely done.  Peppers for the right price can still be effective.  We rotate our DEs and DTs so bringing him off the bench is probably better than any draft pick we may get unless one of the top ones fall.  If any fall to 24 we might want to pass anyhow because they might have issues that made them fall that far.

The front 4 didn't generate much pressure during the super bowl year either.  We signed Jared Allen on his last legs in midseason as a desperate attempt to get more pressure.  The secondary was remarkably better during that season of course.  Bradberry has no business covering WR1s and Worley should be around for depth only.

Peps salary this year was $1 mill.  I believe.

Steve Wilks calls for so many stupid blitz’ and it in end is the downfall of this team.

Blitz’ give our rushers little room to make their moves, which is why we’re more productive rushing four than blitzing. Our secondary also is strained bc offenses always pick up our predictable blitz’ and get the ball out snappy.

Wilks is the latest in Rooney rule bullsh!t.

Wilks will get better, with a better defense.

I agree. It looks like the nfl just took a scan around the league to see what minority coordinator was leading a unit that was having a good year and then added him to the recommended coaches list.

Mosy of these teams already had their guy in mind and just brought Steve in to satisfy the rule.

Thats not to say he still couldn’t land one of these jobs especially if one of the Patriots coordinators decide to stay in New England.

We had two DE’s get 10+ sacks! How the heck is that “not getting pressure”?

If anything THIS year we got great pressure from the front four.

Brees burned us with a quick count to neutralize the wicked pass rush we had.

Pep is not Jared Allen. Pep could play 2 more years.

The secondary and linebackers were getting burned in coverage.

I think our secondary is fine outside of a yound safety if we stop blitzing so much. Its not getting pressure consistently and putting to much on our cbs. If we rely on our front 4 we will get more coverage sacks! I honestly miss McDermott s style.....

    • I used to think Juan was a Zod alt. Agree he's a great poster.
    • Hawks said nah we good and sent him to the shadow realm aka the Wizards. Cold blooded. I mean they're 2-2 in a series with a young up and coming Knicks team largely through 34 year old CJ McCollum. Even if they ultimately lose the series at least they are there and have something to build on. I think Hornets fans are just beaten down and lack the objectivity to assess the situation. They think we are going to get so much worse if and when we finally change gears. Worse how? We've already been a lottery team for years now. We've already been looking to win our first playoff series in about a quarter century. We already can't get past the play in and in failing to do so we have completely embarrassed ourselves twice looking like we don't even belong. Honestly there is absolutely no excuse for a team like the Magic to be more competitive and successful than us in the playoffs. Absolutely disgusting. But that's just me. I was fuging lit when we got the Hornets back in Charlotte but that is old old news. It's time for these boys to get into a playoff series. Enough is enough. If they can't do it for 2026-27 then they need to make wholesale changes regardless.
    • Not one single pick that is asking me why we drafted a guy in the first place. It was a guy we needed and/or a guy that had certain traits making them stand out. Best of all, I feel everyone we drafted are capable of stepping onto the field this year and have a meaningful role (even Kuwatch on special teams). Obviously, nothing is guaranteed but I'm not seeing any huge flags on guys because they're risky projects or massive overreaches.
