NFL Report states Cam had "substantial" knee damage

I know there's a thread about the concussion finding, but I thought this might warrant its own thread:

In the NFL investigation on whether the Panthers followed concussion protocol after the hit to the eye that Cam took, an interesting nugget was buried.  The reason Cam awkwardly fell to the ground was because he could not bend his knee.  From the NFL.com article

Quote

Per the investigation, when "Newton elected to 'take a knee' while coming off the field, he did so in an awkward fashion because he could not bend his right knee normally."

"He had an MRI a day later and it showed substantial damage and a lot of swelling, that's the reason he can't fully bend it as he goes to the ground," Sills told Rapoport.

I had not heard about a knee injury before.  I saw tweets indicating be does not need surgery but I don't love the "substantial" descriptor.

He's one of the toughest QB's this league has ever seen.

It's a shame our fanbase doesn't appreciate him more.

He nearly shreds his knee carrying the run game, and you've got people losing their minds over footwork.

He throw off his back foot dood

knee injuries are never good but if the MRI revealed that he didn't need surgery then there is nothing to really worry about... He's got 7 months to heal.

I'm glad they are saying he doesn't need surgery now. I'm just concerned that they used "substantial" to describe the damage they found. Sounds like there could be a potential ticking time bomb situation. Hopefully I'm over-reacting.

I also hope they don't change their mind in March and decide then that he DOES need surgery.

    • The panthers are such a trash organization at this point that all the huddle can do is argue about which panthers team is historically the worst…good times.
    • Well, hope they're not worried about a torn Labrum or Rotator Cuff, as someone who went through that myself, I know those don't have anything show up on X-Rays but from the MRI, so this is kinda a nothing update, hope it's not a tear or his season is already over if they decide to do surgery now. Which is basically what would be needed to get him to 100% for the start of next season's training camp if it's a labrum.  If he plays the season with it and then does surgery, he's not going to be ready for camp and probably not the start of the season either.
    • I always try to not pay much attention to a team’s preseason win/loss record. The 1982 Washington and 2021 LA Rams both lost every game in the preseason and went on to win the Super Bowl, whereas the 2008 Detroit Lions and 2017 Cleveland Browns both won every game in reason and went on to lose every regular season game. There’s many examples of teams that lose in preseason that go on to have good seasons, but equally there are teams that lose in preseason and that continues in the regular season. Which will we be?  I think our floor is a handful of wins, while our ceiling will probably be around the 9-10 win mark. The latter will require significant improvement from the whole team and coaching staff, and will also need Bryce to play like the QB we drafted him to be. I want to be optimistic and predict a winning season, but it’s really difficult as a Panthers fan!
