What's Hurney thinking about? A few general answers

anybody who thinks it’s going to be different and that hurney “deserves” a second chance (a lot better GMs will never get one) is lying to themselves.

the only thing that deserves anything is this franchise deserving to be able to go in a different direction. if this place had half the competitive spirit that some of these other teams had we’d be bringing in 4 other guys like jimmy raye for interviews.

But according to most on here Gettlemen was a terrible GM?  Now you're telling me that our current GM (and former terrible GM) learned from his mistakes by copying what our previous terrible GM did?   By that logic it is going to be an epic failure.

Uh, no, according to 99.9% on here Gettleman was the greatest GM of all time.

I'd rather give Jimmy Raye his first chance than give Hurney his second.

Here's the thing, Dawg. We're not talking about Hurney in a vacuum here. We're looking at him versus two and potentially three other candidates, all of whom have better resumes than he does.

Don't tell me about why Hurney needs a second chance. Explain to me why anybody who has good football sense should hire him over Jimmy Raye, Lake Dawson or Ryan Cowden.

That's the real question.

here comes the inevitable “HURNEY’S FIRST ROUND PICKS WERE GR8!” circlejerk/overanalysis

We essentially agree then.

Gettleman was a better talent evaluator of pro personnel, Hurney was a better first round drafter.

Having said that, it's a lot easier to draft first round talent when you are constantly in the top half of the draft as opposed to constantly drafting in the mid 20's/early 30's.

So Hurney might have the better first round track record, but he also had a bigger pool of better prospects to pick from on a more consistent basis.

So gettlemans gets a pass simply because he had to pick further down in the draft compared to Hurney??........Bullshit

Anybody that responds to why Hurney is better than Raye, Dawson or Cowden with "he drafted Cam and Luke" should probably just see themselves out.

I can't think of any dumber defense for an ineffective GM than to point to two players he drafted out of dozens, especially when one of those was with the number one overall pick.

Maybe,  just maybe, he is in a unique position to know the Panthers better than any other football executive on the face of the earth,  and as such is in the best position to move the Carolina Panthers toward sustained success.

The fact of the matter is this team has not drafted well the last couple years and it showed the most this season. Absolutely poo at skill positions on both sides of the ball and even the lineman are questionable. I live in the now, and right now i dont think i would have been able to handle seeing gettleman orchestrate another draft for this team. I would rather take my chances with hurney while we figure out who is gonna own this team later on.

Not to worry, skeptics.  We have a former Topcat on this.  All is well. Nothing to see here.

I did not realize that's where she started.  Yikes.

I realize she's been around the team 19 years . . . but to say we couldn't find someone with more experience actually running a sports franchise seems far fetched.

That's basically saying, "This guy has a horrible track record, but we'll keep him over two more qualified candidates because he's worked here before."

Would you keep Brentson Bersin rather than signing a guy like Allen Robinson because Bersin knows the system?

That's the same logic you're using here.

Part of learning is knowing when to get out of the way,  and get out of your own way.  As has been said a couple if times now, Hurney isn't in a vacuum.  Contrary to popular belief,  he has some great people surrounding him,  including scouts.  Perhaps he'll give more thought and importance to their expert advice as far as the particulars. He is certainly more thoughtful about his approach to problem solving and team building.
