I like Star and I'd love to keep him, but I honestly don't think there's a massive drop off from him to Kyle Love and I'm personally tired of seeing us waste 1st round picks in backup roles during the cheap years of their contracts.

Based on what, the reason  K-Love was effective because he was a rotational piece and was fresh. If he is a starter and Star is gone his play along with KK, Butler and the whole LB Corp goes down.

Y’all acting like he is about get paid a QB contract worth $100 million.

Many of the core veteran players are getting phased out and Star along with Norwell are in line to takeover the spots.

He always struck me as a guy who's playing football for just the money. I don't think he really cares about the passion etc or team comradery (never did the dab or smiled during 2015).  He just wants to get paid to do his job for as long as he can.

Even when he was drafted, wasn't overly excited.

We really can't pay a guy top dollar to play 1 or two downs a game. What we don't need to do is completely ignore the issue in FA. Star isn't even the 3rd best NT this year and it means help is out there.

Yep. Star only played 58% of our snaps last year. Love played 38%.

In 2016 Star played 66% and Love only played 21%.

Kyle Love was already starting to eat into Star's snap count. If we don't re-sign Star (which I suspect), I expect Love to be up close to 50% of our snap counts and Butler to go from 30% probably also up to around the 50% mark. We'll need to bring in another DT to play another 20% or so of snaps.

I think a guy like Nagta who might not hold up to 40% snaps but could provide more pass rush would be worth looking into. We also really need to resign Norwell. He about 3x more important than star. Especially with Norv at the wheel of the offense.

Highest paid NT in the NFL (who is in a 3-4 sceme) is making 10.8 a year in his 5 year 54 Mil contract.

The position pays Waay less than a 4-3 3-tech or Rush DT.  KK isnt even the highest paid at 5 years 80 mil or 16 a year.

Star isnt even one of the top NT in the league last year.  Poe a 2x probowler could only get a 1 year 8 mil.  Star should pickup somewhere between 8.5-9 a year which can fit our budget especially if we dont resign Norwell

You’re not taking inflation into account. Contracts go up every year. Garoppolo just became the highest paid player based off 7 starts. Every year there are teams that are loaded with cap room and start throwing insane contracts all over the place.

One important detail you’re missing on Poe is that he got paid $8M a year with a bad back. No team wanted to sign him and he still got $8M. What would they offer a healthy Star? If it came down to paying $8.5-9M a year for Star or that same amount for a game changing CB/S/DE, I’m picking the latter.

Doesn't sound like he has much interest in returning. Burwell is more of a priority anyways. We would be crazy to throw a lot of money at Star.

the only hitch is the money...if we could get him back it would be great, it's not about his attitude ,it's about the cost. He is a pro and has conducted himself accordingly and if he stayed he would continue to do so... a valuable member of this team.

And your not accounting in the inflation in the cap as well.

Inflation of a NT isnt going to shoot up thaaat much in 1 year.

You cant compare a QB to a NT as well as far as contract inflations, they 2 completely different animals.

Nobody wanted Poe. I seem to remember him visiting a handful of teams last year and came down to 3 as far as bidding.  Atl had more $$ than Jax and the other team.  Plus he got 8 mil because it was a 1 year deal. Guys are going to get more money per year off a 1 year vs multi-year.  Star isnt a top 3 NT so he isnt going to come close to that 10 mil a year.

And lastly yes I would love a game changing CB/S/DE.  But 1. There isnt a CB or DE really worth that big money in this years FA class.   And B.  The money your saving from not signing Star isnt going to get you a stud at that position as those positions go for higher money.  Thats like do sign a stud RB for a stud QB, ones position os valued waaaay higher

    • Bryce has improved each season, fwiw, statistically.  His slope is rising.  (Not to say I am high on him--I am not, but I have not given up on him--nor have I given up on XL, but damn he pisses me off)  CJ's slope is descending.   I was never a Penix fan.  Never, I say!
    • That is definitely the down side of all this--on paper, I would offer up a second rounder for him if he passed my interviews.  He has already gone through (seriously?) a treatment program for gambling addiction.  I just see him as a first round talent that we could get with a second rounder.  If I liked Bryce and felt good about paying him $50m per, I would not touch Sorsby.  If Bryce regresses or stays the same--he is going to expect to be paid.  Sorsby, in my view, has a better long-term future as an NFL QB.  He is big, mobile, has good arm strength, and makes wise decisions (on the field) with the football.  He is a great dual threat, RPO QB.   I think he is a perfect solution for the backup qb position and insurance for Bryce should he get injured or suck.  Pickett?  King?  yikes.
    • Hard to say--they are very unpredictable--this article came out last night---after our comments:  (ESPN)   How has the NFL approached NCAA players with gambling violations in the past? David Purdum, sports betting reporter: Quarterback Hunter Dekkers and wide receiver Kayshon Boutte were found to have committed gambling violations while playing college football, and both were allowed to pursue NFL careers. Dekkers was the projected starting quarterback at Iowa State but was ruled ineligible ahead of the 2023 season after an investigation found he had bet on at least one game involving the Cyclones (among other wagers that violated NCAA bylaws). The bet was just $15 on Iowa State to beat Oklahoma State in a 2021 game in which he did not play, but it led to the end of his Division I career. He played one season at Iowa Western Community College in 2024 before signing with the Saints as an undrafted free agent, and he spent last season on the practice squad. Boutte was arrested in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in January 2024 on charges of underage betting while at LSU. The arrest came roughly eight months after he had been drafted in Round 6 by the Patriots, and the charges were ultimately dropped. According to police, Boutte placed more than 8,900 wagers from April 2022 to May 2023, including betting on at least 17 college football games -- at least six of which involved LSU during that span. The NFL did not discipline Boutte.
