Mayock suggests a certain kind of receiver

From Jourdan Rodrigue in The Observer: NFL Network’s Mike Mayock: To best help Cam Newton, get a receiver like...

Quote

Complementing Cam Newton

Even if targeted prospects have the abilities the Panthers have lacked, Carolina must also ultimately select a receiver whose skill set is complementary to Newton’s.

Mayock says he knows the type.

“In the Carolina offense they lost the guy that they traded last year, Benjamin, that had size and an ability to win outside the numbers on back shoulder throws and contested throws,” he said. “I think that’s what helps out Newton more than anything, rather than the timing, quickness, trying to get the ball out on time, anticipate wideouts.”

SMU’s Courtland Sutton (6-4, 216) gets most of his looks on the outside, and is a big-bodied receiver with good contested-catch and back-shoulder ability that Mayock thinks Newton needs. He’s an early possibility for the Panthers at No. 24 in Mayock’s mind.

Back to the future?

Of course, Carolina traded Benjamin to Buffalo in October specifically because they wanted to get faster, and trusted Funchess to step into Benjamin’s workload. He played well as Carolina’s No. 1 wideout, with 405 yards in five games after before he hurt his shoulder and his production dipped again.

And especially when Samuel and Damiere Byrd got hurt, Newton leaned on rookie running back/receiver Christian McCaffrey in a speedy, timing-reliant and productive role for 80 catches, 651 yards and five touchdowns.

It seems unlikely that Carolina would pivot again so quickly and use a high draft pick to select a receiver similar to Funchess.

But if they want to put Mayock’s theory to the test, there are plenty of later-round big-body receivers in this year’s draft.

“(J’mon) Moore from Missouri, (Equanimeous) St. Brown from Notre Dame, Simmie Cobbs, who is from Indiana, Allen Lazard from Iowa State, Marcell Atemen (Oklahoma State). ... They’re third- and fourth-round people,” said Mayock. “There are a whole bunch of big-body wideouts in this draft, and I think they’re the kind of guys (who) can help Carolina and Cam.”

I know Courtland Sutton and EQ St. Brown have some fans on here.

I like Mayock.  He gets it more often than not.

I do too.

My question here would be whether this takes into account how Norv Turner might want to improve Newton's performance, specifically in regard to getting the ball out faster and sooner.

I have been looking for a different kind of WR, but I like St. Brown (NDame) in the third ....

Auden Tate is an intriguing guy for my taste if we go for a big body possession receiver behind Funchess.

He essentially is what we thought Kelvin Benjamin would be: uses his body, catches anything, and runs good routes. The issue is breakaway speed, but the gain is everything else.

Saw him in the Senior Bowl.

Absolutley he was amazing.  His speed is crazy and he will catch over the middle too.  I like Chark.

I watch Ridley and see him ducking outta bounds quite often.  Just a nugget there.  Not sure he likes contact.

BTW...I have gone back and watched Freeman more and damn he is good.  Amazing workload at Oregon but he a big, fast tough dude.  We could do worse.

If we run the downfield Coryell offense, then yeah, a big receiver was what was utilized quite often in the past.

Just depends on whether Turner wants to tweak it or not

Turner prefers big receivers.

Hurney prefers smaller faster ones.

Guess we'll see what happens.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
