Mayock suggests a certain kind of receiver

I wouldnt mind another big bodied WR (right now we only got funchess .. Byrd, Samuel, Clay all under 6' and Russell Shepard sucks/shouldnt be on the roster when season starts)

We just cant start both the new drafted big WR and Funchess at the same time, unless this dude has rare speed for a big guy .

What we really need is a dude with good size he doesnt have to be huge (maybe 6'0'' to 6'3'' ) , and he can run very good routes, has good speed, and most importantly just gets open consistently but can also when 50/50 balls. Basically a really well rounded WR in term of skillset who can be our #1 or #2 guy on the outside. We cant just role with Funchess and a bunch of nobodies (yes I could Byrd and Samuel as nobodies until they can prove to me they can stay healthy and contribute for a full season).

You can get that fast tall wr in FA for cheap...my breakout pick...Jeff Janis

Absolutley he was amazing.  His speed is crazy and he will catch over the middle too.  I like Chark.

I watch Ridley and see him ducking outta bounds quite often.  Just a nugget there.  Not sure he likes contact.

BTW...I have gone back and watched Freeman more and damn he is good.  Amazing workload at Oregon but he a big, fast tough dude.  We could do worse.

Reminds me of Martavis Bryant

Why would Mayock think this? The two biggest WR seasons for the Panthers under Cam were both by Steve Smith. Ginn was our leading WR in '15. Ginn and Brown were #2 and #3 in '16. CMC led the team in receptions last year.

Cam has shown plenty of ability to utilize smaller, faster receivers and the "twin towers" experiment has already failed.

he is just going by Norv Turner and the Coryell offense

big receivers and strong running game has been the history

sound familiar?

Funchess pretty much whiffed on that pass to him in the enzone in the Saints playoff game.. If he had made more effort to try to catch the ball he might have gotten a pass interference call. In some fairness to him I don't think he should have even been out their ...you could clearly see he was hurt and he had been hurt for some time. I blame the coaching staff and front office for not bringing in a vet when the KB trade was made. He could have learned the simple routes Shula calls very easily.

We already have that guy in Funchess, who is a perfect fit for Norv's offense, IMO.

I think the notion that Cam needs big bodied possession receivers is just off-base, TBH.

Cam's best year - that saw him win league MVP - was when he had smaller, quicker receivers like Philly Brown and Jerricho Cotchery + a top deep threat in Ted Ginn to go along with a bigger bodied rookie Devin Funchess. The truth is Cam just never seemed to be quite as good a QB when KB was his #1 wide receiver.

I wouldn't be opposed to drafting a guy like Sutton in the 1st round as he has better speed and runs better routes than Benjamin did and is more of a balanced receiver than a big possession guy. I also like Equanimeous St. Brown a lot.

But honestly, I'd rather us use free agency or trade to address our immediate need for a day-1 starter opposite Funchess by signing Marqise Lee or Paul Richardson or trading for Martavis Bryant.

That way we can draft a young WR if the right guy falls to us, but we also won't be desperate enough to reach for a wideout when there are better prospects at OL, DE, or DB on the board.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
