RiotReport: Breaking Down Funchess, Samuel, And Byrd & Why A Flashy FA May Not Be Necessary

Face it, we were running on 6 cylinders last season when it comes to the offense.

If you don't see tons of WR TD's, you automatically want to call for new WR's.  It is a normal reaction.  Might not be right, but normal.

In my opinion, our offense was never in sync so it would not matter if we had a whole new set of WR's.

I just don't think we got a true picture because of coaching.  Fix that before fixing or trying to fix your roster.

It's like your car won't run over 50mph and you just keep changing the tires.

This is the part of the year where I agree with Sanjay and want another receiving TE to put on the roster.

His message is usually spammy as all hell and there's nothing we can do about it mid-season when he complains about it, but I really want another TE to pair with Olsen and be the heir apparent when he leaves.

If we go into next season with Funchess, Samuel, and Byrd as our top three WRs then Cam Newton should hold out and/or demand a trade. No joke. That would be fuging atrocious and you know it. You convinced yourself that Russell Shepard was going to be an answer this season too. I appreciate your enthusiasm, but sometimes you try a little too hard to convince yourself.

I think it’s obvious that isn’t going to happen. The team has talked getting receivers constantly this offseason

Deja vu for the last 15 years in preseason, thinking "the answer is on the roster!" but it's really not.     The only season where we didn't "feel" like we were short on WRs was the last super bowl run, but that was just an amazing season.    None of these guys are proven, and all seem prone to injury (Funchess at least plays through a lot of it).      I agree with others, getting another TE would help at least, but we definitely need help.    Combine this with our lack of developing WRs and it's probably worth looking at FA, just like almost every year, and especially Cam's tenure here.

It's just not about getting any TE like @Saca312 its getting the one that can do both (Run blocking/Pass Protection & Receiving)

Disagree that our biggest need is a posession receiver, we need Ginn back or someone with speed to take the top off defenses. Can Samuel or Byrd do that? Maybe... but I wouldn't be willing to bet my season on a maybe. We had a posession receiver in Benjamin but no deep threat so defenses were playing cover zero and shutting us down.

Wallace, Watkins, or Robinson

Then another good TE to pair with Olsen

Draft another RB

If Samuel not ready to play because of injury, picking up Austin from F.A. would work out also for insurance.

Byrd injury didn't require surgery, so he should be ready to role.

1. wallace, watkins, or Robinson

2. Funchess

3. Austin

4. Samuel

5. Byrd

6. Draft pick

TE: Olsen and draft pick

This would be a system Corp. All players will have a role in the offense.

    • I like what Freeling brings to the table all around. If he is willing to put in the work he has an opportunity to be one of the better Tackles in the league down the line. Hunter Brazzell and Hecht are all premium additions but development from our staff are the key to unlocking them. Hopefully Lee and Wheatley will provide much needed additional depth to our secondary. Beyond that it's important not to get too caught up in draft grades. Many drafts over the years that turned out to be really good were not fawned over with praise. While some that were ended up being historical duds. Panthers fans ought to know this as well as anyone. In conclusion...
    • Maybe a bit of a homer take but I can't give us a grade lower than A.   Freeling was arguably the best LT prospect in the draft.  His athletic ability is off the chart and at 6'7" that can move.  It was a no brainer pick.   Hunter's key word is Violence. Putting him next to Brown should scare an offensive coordinator. These two give Scourton and Phillips plenty of chances to get one on one opportunities. Brazzell, another tall receiver with sprinter speed.  Our WR room is filled with tall talented WR.  Brazzell is going to give us a WR that can take to roof off the defense.  Basically Jimmy Horn with size. W. Lee III has a nickname of the Blanket. (heard this on the Beleav podcast with J. Stewart)  What a great name.  A great value in the 5th round. Hecht A strong, fast and extremely smart center. Many had him listed as the best center in the draft.  He's most likely a starter sooner than later. Wheatley A good safety in round 5.  Someone who could see playing time.   Kuwatch  I love this pick.  At minimum he will be a key piece on special teams and with some good coaching he'll see some packages where he'll play.  His down piece is he doesn't stay up in the running game.  Good coaching will fix this.  He reminds me a bit of A.J. Klein.   All these picks were great value.  I believe everyone of them were graded higher than the pick we took them.   Dan Morgan is IMO doing a great job turning this team into a good team with great depth.
