Free Agency Notes and Speculation

FYI: One other interesting note from Grossi.  He's vehemently opposed to the Browns taking Barkley number one.  Says it should be quarterback or nothing because Cleveland has screwed the pooch on quarterback too many times to risk losing out on the best option.

Unless they aren’t in love with any QB and decide to add one first in free agency. Think about it. Why even attempt to trade for AJ Mccarren during the season? They had been scouting during the season and knew who the top QB prospects were at that point. They also knew with a winless record, all they had to do was stay the course and they’d end up with the 1st pick and dibs on drafting “their” guy.

But they chose to try and trade for AJ any way. Unless that was a huggggge smokescreen, I could see them not being in love with any of these guys. Darnold blows, Josh Allen isn’t a winner, Baker has the intangibles but not the size...Rosen is probably the best option but is he good enough to get that excited about? I dunno

Interesting article which sheds some light on why teams like Cleveland may start to sign some big names to lucrative contracts or sign their own to bigger deals to meet the NFL mandated salary floor. Teams have to spend 89% and in 2017 Cleveland spent 61%. It is a four year cycle so no immediate need but it is something to keep in mind.

I think the Barkley #1 and all the much ado about AJ are just a smoke screens.  I'm in the camp that the Browns HAVE to get their QB.  Remember, it was a dumb clerical decision that caused them to miss AJ.  Got to wonder if it was truly a mistake, or a calculation?  Or is that too much tin foil on my hat? =)

While all the QBs have warts on them, they all have areas they shine.  Hue is supposed to be a QB whisperer so you mean to tell me the only guy he can make a working offense out of is AJ McCarron?

Then again, this is the Browns and Jackson has an ego larger than the rock and roll hall of fame...

This is turning out to be quite the melodramatic off season.  Thanks Cleveland!

I don't understand why this is so hard.  If you have the first pick, and there is a draft eligible QB who you believe is an NFL caliber starter and you don't have one, you draft him.  Maybe the Browns don't think any of these guys are NFL starters . . . but damn, you don't roll the dice on losing your guy over a RB.

The Dolphins are interested in free agent TE Ed Dickson.

With Julius Thomas on the chopping block and Anthony Fasano's contract up, the Dolphins are left with MarQueis Gray and AJ Derby atop their tight end depth chart. Dickson has been a serviceable No. 2 tight end, but he's not a starting solution. The 30-year-old averaged 18.4 catches over the last five seasons.

Could they take Barkley #1 and draft a QB # 4?

Is there a significant difference in college QB's this year where you cold get the same talent level with the 4th pick as the 1st ?

I’d say yes. Remember Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf 1-2 or Drew Bledsoe and Rick Mirer 1-2. Not saying Drew was Manning but if you let the Giants and someone trading up to 3 pick the QBs they think are the best, there can be a gigantic drop off. They’ve passed on Wentz, got jumped for Goff and didn’t take Trubisky or Watson. Maybe it works out but 1 of those 4 or more could turn into perennial studs. This is supposed to be a good QB draft so they don’t want to find out 10 years from now that they passed on a soon to be HOFer. At the end of the day QB is the one position where you can go from bad to playoff contenders every year.

Thnx bugs

Because Cleveland.

I wish I had a better explanation, but there's not really a consistent pattern with their moves other than that they tend to be wrong.

    • Yeah, nobody has ever been drafted successfully in the NFL who had a breakout final season in college of course......A good final season in college of course always means failure in the NFL........
