Free Agents vs Draft Picks

In the past Gman tried to address every position of need via free agency giving him the option of BPA.

If you were GM, of the following positions, who would you pick up in Free Agency?

Who would you Draft (take into consideration you can't have all 1st rounders in the draft)

DE ... Draft

RB...both

OT...Draft

S...Draft

WR...both

C...Draft if BPA

CB...both

The idea is to put WHO you want.  I thought it would be interesting to see who you would sign and who you would draft.  Actual names.

I would follow Dave's guide and try to address as many as possible in FA except C. We have 3 starting Centers on this team.

DE, Rb, CB Draft

Rush the passer,  shut down his WR,  and run down their defense

sign proven  free agent linemen and Wrs

DE  Free agency.  We are developing Hall, we have a pass-rusher (Addison) and a run stuffer with below average pass rushing (Horton).  Draft not real good in Free Agency.  Sweat, by the way, is a bust waiting to happen.

RB  Draft, 3rd round.  We do not need Zeke Elliot--we need a pounder.  I think CAP needs a shot too.

OT If Moton is playing LT and will be on the pine for another year, I would rather not draft a T or sign a free agent.  Instead, I would prefer a LG.  GUARD: Draft, Round 2.  OT last pick, round 7.

S Free Safety: Draft, 1st round.  Strong Safety free agency ($3-4 m range).  Adams is too old.

WR:  Free agency: Second tier, $8m range.  Draft: 6th round

C: Draft, Round 3.   A smart player to groom behind Kalil for a year.

CB:  Draft: Round 5. Free agency

Free Agency: DE ($4m to Peppers), WR* ($7-8m for Wallace or Richardson), SS* ($3-4 M for McDouglad or Brooks), CB* ($8-9m for Breeland, for example)

Expect more cuts to free another $3-4 million

Draft: 1-FS*, 2-LG*, 3-RB, C, 5-CB, 6-WR, 7-OT, DT

Then it becomes a "My guy is better than your guy thread"

and in October a "see I told you that free agent/draft pick would be a Star/bust Thread

Areas to consider:  Are we OK at C?

Tackle:  Do we need a T this year? (Moton)

Left Guard:  Please don't re-sign Silatolu.  I drafted a LG in the second round, but can we not find a LG on the roster or the lower end of free agency?  A T that did not work out, for example?

ain't nobody got time for that.

Address WR and Secondary in FA. We are too young at these positions. Cannot keep waiting to develop

Draft DE, LB, OL not as big needs and DE and LB would be rotational and can be brought along.

Having said that it's still BPA and if James is there for the picking in the draft, then so be it. Maybe it's why Hurney won't bust a move on a trade b/c we could be waiting for draft day. If i knew that for sure, i'd be okay. I really hate that we're missing an opportunity with Darby to solidify corners.

BTW what's Cap's cap hit if we let him go?

    • AT got what he deserved. Be gone and enjoy those 4 catches and the bench and your pay cut
    • we have been bad offensively basically every game Rico Dowdle hasn't gone full Tecmo Bowl Bo Jackson on folks.
    • Strongly disagree with the premise here. Without getting too into it, the biggest gripe for many has always been his footwork and pocket presence.  Shallow drops, happy feet, bad awareness - his overall technique is highly unconventional and not beneficial to his size/frame.  His upper body gets mad out of sync with his lower, drops back parallel to the LOS, erratic behavior. When you take that to the NFL level, you get swallowed up. And he got shellshocked and started bailing way too soon on plays. Unnecessary throwaways when he should step UP into the pocket and hit.   He got away with it in school because sooo much of his work was out of structure or quick hits to Jamo.  He was able to not bail early and stick in the pocket this last game. He also was dropping deeper than he usually does to create sight lanes. He can’t really outrun DLs so he needs to create that space via drop to survey properly. When he does these bs skip hops in the gun, he barely drops and is flooded. He needs to stay active with his feet but learn to step into the pocket more.  His average arm when he’s not doing this right turns Pennington esque.
