What is Hurney's plan?

Im starting to get worried that Hurney is about to ruin the core of this team. We are on the verge of losing both Norwell and Star, and with very little capspace to make a impact signing.

When you sit back and look at reality, we are weak at multiple positions DT/DE/DB/S/WR/G/RB.

Going to be an interesting week for Mr.Hurney, we shall see the end result.

With Olsen's age, I would add TE.

Hopefully something similar to how Gettleman addressed it. Plug some holes with middle of the road to low tier FA in preparation to go BPA in the draft.

That is all we can do.  Take a look at free agency:

We must have a DE--expect that to cost $10m+ if we do not get Pep back.

Economically, We should get a G and a S-we can best afford average players at those positions.  Money gone.

But we have these huge contracts for players like Ryan Kalil who has played 14 games in 2 years.  Marty says he will not be emotional, but this is a great example.  Good teams send Ryan Kalil packing.  Marty's blindspot and Kalil knew it.  He announced that this is his last year, probably knowing Marty would back off. Ryan has not played at a pro bowl level for some time, but his paycheck suggests otherwise.  With so many needs and Larsen and Van Roten signed, we could use Kalil's salary in free agency.  Marty will not do it.

Hurney and everyone else are on their way out once this team is sold.  They're all going to try and go out in style and win the Super Bowl.  Don't be surprised if you start seeing future draft picks slung around in trades.

Interesting point.  However, Hurney is going to try  to impress the new ownership, so going all in may not be his strategy.  I do not trust him, and before, when his back was against the wall, he started trading away first rounders like they were nothing.  That led to some dark times.

Personally, I DESPISE Marty Hurney.  Some of his decisions are terrible. However, I will say that I understand both of the trades he has made--KB and DW.  (KB trade was stupid because of the timing--you do not trade your #1 WR for future draft picks during a playoff run--especially if you are the interim GM).

I think we all know were the Worley situation was heading.  The draft is rather rich at CB and Worley would have lost his job and become a headache in the locker room.  We got a WR for him, one that could be good--or not.  Worst case scenario--we have a Special teamer and #5 WR--best case scenario, he grabs 50 balls while keeping the deep thirds honest.

If I were Hurney, if Peppers gets away, I would go after Trent Murphy from Washington.  He is 26, now a free agent coming of knee surgery.  Had 9 sacks in 2016 as a rotational DE.  Was a tweener in Washington (DE/OLB) and might want to start.  $10m might get him here.

    • Are you now equating best/worst rush defense with best/worst defense? Those are separate things entirely. For rush defense, depending on how you quantify it, he has been largely in the bottom third of the league his entire career as a defensive coordinator.  As you can see, aside from his one year in Denver, he has never been above 20th in yardage. Now, there is context to consider which is most coordinators choose to run on him(24th-32nd ranked in his three year in Carolina). So, if you just simply look at Y/A, it has been a relatively mixed bag. Twice a top 15 defense but twice a bottom 15 defense.  The thing the should make all this good/bad run defense a lot clearer is the right most columns. Evero's defense has always prioritized pass defense and confusing QB's. That's the core of his defensive philosophy, as has been reported relatively widely. As much as there are ample personnel issues on that side of the ball(many of which he contributes to with his below average talent evaluations) his defenses may never be truly elite in rush and pass defense unless they are stocked with defensive talent. Like....his Denver defense that he inherited was. To that point, if you look at all those rankings from the three years Fangio(of whom Evero is a noted disciple) it shows a progression of getting steadily better into the far more elite defense it is now under Vance Joseph. As far as his HC interest, recall that he was a hot commodity after Denver and that cooled significantly after his first two years here. I suppose if you count getting interviews for HC positions as a benchmark for being a good coach(most would not) then he is middle of the packish.
