Nice "BuzzFeed" type title...

Seven free agents the Panthers could pursue

Quote

Jeremy Hill, RB, Cincinnati

Cutting Jonathan Stewart left Cameron Artis-Payne as the Panthers’ only physical, power-style RB. Hill, who was an afterthought behind Giovani Bernard and Joe Mixon last year, rushed for 1,100 yards as a rookie in 2014 and had 29 rushing TDs his first three seasons. Hill looks like a reasonably priced complement to Christian McCaffrey.

Taylor Gabriel, WR, Atlanta

Acquiring Eagles wideout Torrey Smith likely takes the Panthers out of the running for top-tier receivers such as Sammy Watkins, Allen Robinson and Paul Richardson. But they still could use a speedy, shifty playmaker in the slot. Interesting fact on Gabriel: According to Pro Football Focus, he netted the highest passer rating of any receiver in 2016 when he averaged 16.5 yards per catch and caught six TDs.

Luke Willson, TE, Seattle

The Panthers could need a backup tight end, depending on what happens with Ed Dickson. Seahawks starter Jimmy Graham is one of this year’s top tight ends. But Willson’s ability to block and catch (a career-high four touchdown catches last season) could make him a nice value signing in Carolina.

Denico Autry, DE, Oakland

Few outside of Raider Nation knew much until recently about Autry, a 6-5, 273-pounder from Albemarle who was an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi State. Autry played in Khalil Mack’s shadow in Oakland before his five-sack season last year, when he also knocked down seven passes. It looks like Autry will hit the market, based on reports out of the Bay area.

Morgan Burnett, S, Green Bay

The Panthers cut Kurt Coleman, and Mike Adams turns 37 this month, so they need at least one safety and maybe two. Burnett, 29, is an impact player in the back end who’s been bothered by nagging leg injuries in recent years.

Tre Boston, S, San Diego

The former Panther snagged a career-high five interceptions last season after Dave Gettleman cut him. Boston is a young player (25) with good speed who is familiar with Carolina’s scheme.

Rashaan Melvin, CB, Indianapolis

The journeyman had a breakout season in 2017 with seven interceptions and 13 pass breakups. He’s big (6-2, 193), young (28) and could step in immediately for Daryl Worley, assuming his market doesn’t get too rich for the Panthers.

I still think he's wrong about WR.  Voth is in the organization and thinks we're making a run.  Panthro hinted at ARob (although I prefer Watkins) and he is much more knowledgeable than any reporter we have lol.

Outside of that, I really like Hill, Autry, and Boston off that list.

The headline is as straight forward and no nonsense as it can be.

This is a Buzzfeed headline for those attempting to make jokes but missing wide and short.

He said we would be making a run at a veteran wr and we did Torrey Smith. Hate to say it but that's probably going to be it.

Most beat reporters have inside information.  I was working at the Charlotte Observer (weekends during grad school) in the Sports dept.  I had information on everything and was trusted with it.  I might suggest something with the blessing of the parties involved if they trusted me not to throw them under the bus.  A great example was a rumor that I heard about Jim Valvano.  I called his home and left a message.  He called back, telling me (left a message) that it was not true.  I knew that Valvano would not lie to me--he would tell me not to run the story yet if it were true.  However, later that night, another reporter that had recently pissed him off called his house about the rumor every 20 minutes.  Valvano came home, had been drinking, and sarcastically confirmed the rumor.  20 minutes later, the story was on ESPN:  "Jim Valvano is the new coach of the NJ Nets".  The reporter had to retract the story the next day--JV stuck him because he was a pest.  When I watch Person at the pressers, I get the idea that he is not respected by the players or coaches--so he has no knowledge.

Point?  I never get the idea that Person has any idea of what is going on.   They have shut him out.  He is no more of an "Insider" than you or me.  If 2 or 3 of these players are signed, he is in the loop.  If not, he is dart boarding this one.

I know you're including a good dose of sarcasm, which I'd usually appreciate. In previous years, I'd roll my eyes at people continuously asking about some of the bigger names about to hit the free agent market. This year is different.

I would be upset with Hill, but fine with any of the other guys.

Hill just isn't any good. He's really not. Ask any Bengal fan and they cursed his name whenever they saw him on the field over Bernard and Mixon.

I kinda like the idea of Taylor Gabriel.

He seems like he's what Damiere Byrd would be if he were ever healthy.

I like Gabriel too.  I saw enough of him in 16 to like his game a lot.  As a bonus, it would hurt Atlanta for him to leave.
