Panthers writing staff looks at the team's free agency options

Mr. Scot

Here: Panthers free agency primer

Main points...

QB: Panthers will try to keep Derek Anderson.

RB: Probably looking at a draft pick here

WR: Maybe, but don't expect a big name. More likely someone like Marquise Lee, Taylor Gabriel or Albert Wilson

TE: Luke Wilson, oft injured Tyler Eifert or coach's son Richard Rodgers could be backup options

OL: Need a left guard; maybe Josh Kline, Zach Fulton or Senio Kememente.

DL: Doesn't sound like they expect Peppers back. Pernell McPhee could be a possibility at DE while Shamar Stephen or Beau Allen could come aboard at DT.

LB: No.

DB: Yes at both spots. Bashaud Breeland, Aaron Colvin or Morris Claiborne could be corner options while Kenny Vaccaro and Tavon Wilson could be checked out at safety. Two possibles have Panther ties. Everyone remembers Tre Boston but not many remember that Chiefs safety Ron Parker got his start as a practice squadder here.

ST: Those decisions were already made.

I can't see the Jags letting Lee get out of town after deciding to let Robinson walk especially with Allen Hurns being super injury prone. They'd be one predictable WR injury away from having a WR corps as bad as ours last year and Blake Bortles isn't the type of QB who is going to be able to overcome a poor WR corps. Fournette would be facing 8 and 9 man boxes on every snap.

Not that it means much, but no mention from Voth and  the others of guys like Trey Burton or Donte Moncrief.

Given their restrictions on what they can and can't say, I'm not sure if that makes it more likely we're looking at them or less.

I wish we'd wake up and realize that DA has been trash for a couple of years now. He's done. We have to be the only NFL team even willing to talk to him at this point. I would've honestly rather have kept Webb.

I think that's a Rivera thing.

The fact that we are not an appealing destination for Peppers to wrap up his career is absolutely deflating.

I get it, there is no guarantee we are going to be in contention for a ring this year, and also no gaurantee that we would can keep him for another two years with the shaky ground our FO/staff are on.

A huge slap in the face to you, JR. You created this mess.

Reading between the lines:

  • The Panthers are likely to have a TE whose last name is the same (phonetically) as their previous QB....You can't find stuff like this anywhere else.
  • Beau Allen is a nice pick.  I think he will be Star's fill in.  Good player.
  • I see Parker coming here to start---what a story that would be--Newberry boy done good.
  • I am not a fan of the Guards listed--need more information
  • Does everyone here feel that Gabriel will be the WR added?  I do.  We will take a player from a rival for other reasons.
