As a neuropsycologist who currently works with NFL players, I could create a much better measure to indicate intelligence.

Would need a composite test that measures novel problem solving, processing speed, executive function, and working memory.

The current test is garbage.

but will it scale?

Overall probably the Wonderlic but the bench press is essentially worthless as well, especially for WR/DBs.

eh, there's a lot of hand fighting that goes on on the outside, so it means more than like say a running back who is literally doing the opposite of a press when he's carrying the ball. Or should be anyway.

Bench Press at least throws out a huge red flag for people with deficiencies (like that Texas AM DE who did like five reps) and lets you see something is really fuging wrong. But overall, it's just a flashy thing.

Same with Wonderlic. As long as you don't Vince Young it no one gives a poo. And he was still a first round pick.

Overall, I'd say bench is dumber. Good bench is all about proportions and insertion points and poo.

Wonderlic is like the combine drug test. They don't really care, they just want to see if you can do the bare minimum (dry out for two weeks for a test you know is coming)

Frank Gore got a 6 on the Wonderlic. AJ Green got a 10. Fitzpatrick got a 48.

You'd like a few positions (QB, OL, LB) to do well on the Wonderlic but it's not a predictor of success.

Why do lineman run the 40s and high jump?

running the 40 is about acceleration. Really they only care about the first 10 yards. Think about pulling guards and stuff.

High jump is the oldest athletic test in the world. Even today when the Beijing Sports Academy goes into the contry side to find their athletes, one of like three things they do is see which 3 years olds can jump the highest.

It's why olympic weightlifters have such absurd vertical jumps
