David Fizdale Seen as Leading Candidate For Hornets Coaching Opening

Recommended Posts

Fizdale most recently served as the head coach for the Memphis Grizzlies where he led the Grizzlies to the Western Conference playoffs in his first season as the head coach with a 43-39 record. Fizdale was relieved of his position this year after the Grizzlies started 7-12 and Fizdale publicly criticized Grizzlies center Marc Gasol.

I'd love this hire. I was reading an article about all of the potential coaches on the market last night and WISHING we would fire Clifford so that we could get in on them. Fizdale, Blatt, Stackhouse and a few others ALL sounded very promising and that is certainly better than anything Cliff was going to provide. The way he ruined Monk's rookie season over ego or stubbornness was ludicrous. He may be the world's best assistant coach be he is crap as a head coach. Maybe he could do something with a team like golden state or the cavs but... hell WHO COULDN'T!?!?!?

Fizdale would be a solid hire, but let's be real here. Of the current head coach openings, Charlotte is probably the least desirable since we are loaded with awful contracts and have a late lottery selection. New York and Orlando each have a better stable of younger players and will both have a higher pick. I think it's likely Fizdale will have his choice of wherever he'd like to go. My guess is that it won't be Charlotte. Would love to be wrong.

I like Stackhouse as a candidate a lot though. He seems to be a very realistic get.

Looks like the Hornets have honed in on Fizdale, Messina, and Udoka.

Personally, I'd prefer 1. Fizdale, 2. Messina, 3. Udoka

I'll note that it was also reported that Stackhouse is a contender for the Hornets vacant head coaching position, however, apparently the Magic are the most interested team in Stackhouse.

I agree with that order. Will honestly be happy with Fiz or Messina

I find it interesting that Spurs fans are openly and legitimately upset that Udoka is being considered. Most of them would much rather have Messina leave than Udoka. I don't know much about either, but makes me wonder....

    • I mean, I hear what y'all are saying, but Derrick could have been positive without being negative.  He essentially accused people of not seeing Bryce's improvement because of their desire to not be wrong. He could've kept it about Bryce and the team. For example, he could've said: "Bryce has made strides, and we believe in him. This coming season, his continued improvement will turn a lot of people into believers."  That would've been supportive of his teammate and sent a message to the doubters. That being said, his tact almost summoned and left the door ajar for more skepticism. That's my take anyway. Bryce has improved from the bottom to perhaps skirting the line between the bottom third and mid-third at best...after three seasons. We've all seen it. Yay! In my mind, Bryce has still got a long way to go and a short time to get there, but my expectations are top five--at least top 10--always! Yes, I am a fan, so there's that, but I don't believe it's unreasonable to expect excellence. Hopefully the Panthers FO has the same mindset (and that doesn't even necessarily have anything to do with what we gave up to acquire him). That is the lens I'm looking through. Derrick Brown has his homer glasses on. He just needs to be more diplomatic and thoughtful with his words in my opinion, but I get it that he's a good teammate.
    • I have no doubt the Canes will come out like gangbusters, huge bounce back from game one - my only concern is Freddie, if he lets in a couple of softies and Dobes stays hot we could be in trouble.
