According to Joe Person's first depth chart, he has the pecking order at...

WR1: Funchess,  Moore

WR2: Smith,  Samuel

Slot: Moore,  Wright

I don't know about you guys, but I see this as a problem.  Yes, initially we see Moore as the slot guy, even though we just signed Jarius Wright.  Personally, I think his talent and rookie lack of film will be wasted if we relegate him to slot guy.  I personally think we should give him a crack at starting at 1 or 2, and have Torrey used for certain deep threat plays.  I know Camp and post June 1st cuts are still to come, but right now I am worried Funchess might get in the way of some of our talent at the position, similar to Kelvin.

Thoughts?

Samuel needs snaps

he can be a stud.  needs experience

Agreed. He needs to be 100% healthy first. With seeing the rest of our depth chart there is absolutely no reason to rush him back. He's not make or breaking our first few games. I personally wouldn't be opposed to starting him on the PUP list if he ankle isn't 100%. Moore, Byrd, and Smith can all probably play his role while he gets back up to speed.

Agreed. There is enough talent to let him stay off the field and recuperate.

As much as I have heard how old and slow Torrey Smith is...he's only been in the league half as long as Peppers.  Either we need a new definition of "old" or Peppers is just a complete freak of nature. I'm optimistic that Torrey Smith will help this team out more than people know or realize.  Wait and see I guess....and yes, Pep is a freak of nature.

As long as Moore is on the field for a vast majority of offensive snaps , I'm not sure that I care which exact position hes starting at in game 1.

People get stuck on WR depth charts but you have to remember how huge of a part of the receiving game that Greg and CMC are. If Samuel stays healthy it maybe WR by committee with the exeption of Funchess because hes out tallest WR.

Long term.. this is what I want our recieving corps to look like

Funch

Moore

Samuel

Thomas

CMC

BAM wright and smith are stop gaps..  if our young guys are ready i want these old guys gone and out. The future is what I listed above

I think Funch, Moore, and Samuel can eventually be used interchangeably.. role to role.. play by play

allows for some serious mismatch awesomeness and flexibility

Those 2 are so heavily used because our wide outs suck.

Smith is only 29, I don't know where this ''old'' label has come from, GInn was lighting it up for us here at 30+ and most of you all wanted Gettleman to retain his service as he was staring age 32 in the face.

A lot of you guys need to accept the fact that for the first time since the 2012 season most recently, we have a nice group of receivers as well as reason to be optimistic about TE..

2012 - Smith / LaFell / Ginn / Hixon -- Shockey / Olsen

2013 (Never Forget) - Benjamin / Cotchery / Avant / Brown -- Olsen / Dckson

Current - Moore / Funchess / Smith / Samuel / Wright / Byrd -- Olsen / Thomas

We have come a good ways, since that 2012 season, this is a very talented / niche group of receivers, Funchess has #1 potential, we all saw it up to the shoulder injury, and even still he played very well. Moore also possesses #1 potential and I look forward to his development, Smith is a PROVEN NFL deep threat as we continue to work Samuel / Byrd in to that role; meanwhile Wright is a 3rd down answer similar to Cotchery except he actually has mid 4.4 speed to pair with that ability as well.

These guys rotate in and out and play all over the place.  Guys get hurt all the time.  Funchess and Smith will play 1 and 2.  Moore will play 1 and 2 and slot.  Samuel will play slot and some 2.  Wright will play mostly slot.  CMC will play some slot.  Byrd, assuming he makes the team, will play mostly outside.

I think depth charts for WRs are silly.  Especially by Joe Person in May.

    • I’ve rarely ever been more sure of anything than losing out — but how can anyone say with a straight face “Bryce hasn’t improved, but Canales has and he’s masks his flaws”. You have to be so out of touch with reality to put one way above the other when discussing those two.
    • Last night was the classic example of a visiting team just holding on through the wave of emotion a home team has at the start of a big time game. Bama’s first two kickoff returns really set them back as far as playcalling and allowed OU to dictate field position. The emotion of the home crowd fed into what OU was doing at that point, and it felt like Bama would not be able to overcome that.     Once the kickoff returner was told to fair catch every kick, the game shifted, as Bama wasn’t starting each drive inside their own 15. It was then that Bama was able to make some plays, outscoring OU 34-7 the rest of the way.  I think the last 3/4 of the game proves Bama was the better team. OU was just able to ride the initial wave of emotion to a big lead, but Bama held on just enough.  However, had OU blocked the punt on Bama’s second drive and scored a TD (vice a FG on the ensuing drive), things likely would have been different.  Anyway, Roll Tide!
