Linebacker David Mayo took some snaps with the first-team defense in team drills, alongside Shaq Thompson. Mayo had a diving pass breakup in the end zone.

▪ Receiver Damiere Byrd had two clutch catches in double coverage during team drills. Receiver Torrey Smith stretched for a touchdown catch in the back of the end zone during red zone drills. That got the offense chirping.

▪ As he did all last year, running back Christian McCaffrey worked both at running back and pass-catcher out of the backfield. He also lined up in the slot at times.

It’s a good problem to have so much talent that Byrd might not make the cut but damn do I ever want him to.

If Byrd does not make the team it will definitely be a loss. When given opportunities he has did well and so far it looks like he is continuing to trend upward by making clutch plays when we need him to. He doesn't have to have 1000 yards to be an important piece in our WR group! He is our Edelman in the making!

I still think his special teams return ability will make us carry 6 receivers.  Especially how devastated our WR core was last year.  I would be fine with that. Just so I don't have to watch the turf monster tackle Bersin in the playoffs.

Byrd had a nice highlight last year, but hey remember that one highlight Armanti Edwards had?

For the moment, he's still one of those guys who has everyone saying "okay, THIS is the year he's gonna break out".

I hope he does, because otherwise he's gonna start competing with Michael Vick learning the West Coast Offense.

Love to see Curtis doing well and really pulling for him to have a good season this year ( obviously ).  Probably my favorite take away so far was seeing how good Ryan looked in practice...we need that dude good and healthy for our deep playoff run this season ( one can hope, right? )
