It's finally hitting me that Garrett Gilbert being the backup QB wasn't just talk, it's probably happening

Maybe it's premature to make this thread before we see how he plays this preseason, but this sounds like a pretty insane idea to me. Cam only missed a handful of plays in 2017 due to injury, but that obviously wasn't the case in the few years prior to that. What has Rivera seen from him that we haven't? His stats last preseason against guys that are playing in Canada or are sitting in customer support call centers right now was 29 of 50 for 317 yards, 0 TDs, 1 pick in 4 games. Am I just completely misremembering this guy's production because he is a complete blank slate in my mind like a Tony Pike.

Thoughts on an unproven nobody that's never shown anything rolling into 2018 as the backup to Cam?

1. If Cam goes down for any significant time, we're screwed anyway

2. Rivera probably feels like Norv's schemes can overcome mediocre QB play (and hopes Gilbert can rise to mediocre)

3. Could possibly still sign a better backup QB after camp (Will the Jets keep Bridgewater?)

Derek Anderson couldn't beat the Bucs. We needed to go in some other direction. Not saying it is the best option but it certainly isn't too much worse than where we were.

I guess that's a good way of putting it. DA is completely done as a QB at this point, but I guess I felt more comfortable with the suck that I know than the suck that I don't. Wish we had drafted someone.

The plan is obviously to let the young guys battle it out during training camp to see if someone emerges. It was beyond time to develop a new backup QB for the long term. If none of them step up, there will be veteran QB's the Panthers can grab later in the preseason. Hell, Teddy Bridgewater could even be available. To be real, it doesn't matter who the backup is because if Cam misses any extended amount of time, the season is over.

I feel more comfortable with an inkling of hope he doesn't suck as bad as Anderson. You cant do worse than certain loss.

I mean there aren’t a lot of good alternatives.  Not any cheap ones anyway.

If our back-up QB sucks, then we aren’t any different than like 28 other teams.

Yes there is.  Josh Dobbs for a late pick.  Immediately.  Doesn’t get cheaper than a late pick on a guy with 3 more years left on a rookie day 3 salary.  Make the move now and he gets training camp, which is invaluable.  He’s obviously got light years more athleticism and potential than Gilbert.

    • I liked him when he was at Michigan because I'm a Wolverine homer. After that...
    • Hello, soccer fans [crickets, tumbleweed flies by]. The World Cup kicks off in less than 2 weeks and, well, 🇺🇸USA USA USA🇺🇸 and all. We beat Senegal 3-2 yesterday in a tune-up friendly at BoA, with Christian Pulisic finally entering the scoring column.  How will we do in the World Cup once our tournament kicks off on the 12th? Well, there are 48 teams (assuming Iran is there) and it feels like one of two thing happens: we get grouped for the first time since '98, or we make it to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. I tried out the lottery for an Atlanta game and struck out, so yesterday was as World Cup as I'll get for in-person ($285/ticket for like Norway vs $39/ticket for USMNT right beforehand was a layup).  The U.S. has a travel-heavy schedule in group play, playing in LA, Seattle and LA. Real road warrior mentality being built. Glad the east coast gets worse kickoff times for a NA World Cup than a Qatar World Cup.
    • Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.
