Will we even miss Thomas Davis

We really don't use formations with 3 LBs that frequently, which is why Shaq has been standing on the sideline so much over his first 3 years.  In most formations between the 20's, we're using a nickel back.

Yes, I know this. We use 3 lb about 34% of the time, primarily when running our T2Hybrid/Cvr3. I was stating TD will still be a starter, and so will Shaq. Not sure why we are stating he will come off of the bench.

The thing you have to worry about with older veterans like Davis isn't how they look in week one or week two. It's how they look after week ten or so.

A season of professional football is an extremely grueling thing, and generally speaking a veteran who has "lost a step" in week one will have lost two or three by the time the season is over. That's why in a sense, the suspension is a good thing for Davis. He'll only have to play a 12 game season instead of a 16 game one.

Thompson probably should have been taking the lion's share of the snaps a year ago. He definitely should be taking them now. I like Davis as much as anybody, and you hate to see favorite players succumb to age, but it happens to everyone. you're not doing the team a favor if you fail to acknowledge that. Just the opposite.

clearly your perception is lacking. Reading and understanding the irony and nuance escapes you sir.

And Yet. All are on their last year. TD is the only one i would single out as staying too long and keeping a young and talented man down and way from play time. (SHAQ)

Olsen? Well nine games out last season..and now this foot? He is more or less a legacy player at this point. One we all want to see play again..and will cheer when he gets a catch or two. Sadly that seems to not be anytime soon.  Kalil? Well Kalil is awesome, but is set to retire.

If you read any of my posts...you know 2 things. 1. I say poo that is unpopular that fans that have their head up some anus .  2. I say things because i dont give a darn about making friends here or "pie". Heck...i dont even read replies if they dont come within the 20 minute window I am online. Many may say i am a troll. I am not. I dont do it on purpose...but wow people are so easy to troll even when its not my mission~

I am still failing to understand whether or not you stated that they should retire today, because it reads that way. They are set to retire after this season. TD, RK, and GO are going to move on after this year. So what exactly are you saying? If you meant that they should retire after this season, then fair enough I agree. However, if you mean right now, that is dumbest thing ive ever fuging heard. So basically they should just quit on their team?

I really dont care if you are looking for friends on the internet or not. Thanks for laying out your online personality, but I dont care about that either.

It was nice to see him get a full role so the people in here who thought he was a bad pick realized how good he is.

Just to add, this again speaks to Ron and his love of vets. Shaq was solid last year even though all everyone remembers was not getting Kamara down. Maybe Shaq should have been in place over Davis last year. Same with Larsen over Ryan, Moton over Matt. My niece over Amini.

Damn I was going to post this. He is TDs replacement and was never in the previous seasons doing what he was meant to do/is going to do when TD is gone. It's another Rivera thing too btw as much as we love TD we can't keep holding onto these emotional entities or we will never be a consistent team.

He was never a bad pick and you still see people talking stupid about CMC....

Yes they all need to move on. TD especially. I know i know bro...its blasphemy. How dare I say such? Have a drink and get over it~~~

Okay now that I do understand what you are saying and "reading and understanding the irony and nuance escape me" is not my problem. Btw would it not be "nuances of irony?" Technically, irony/ironic would be an adjective of "nuance" and not an object as you used in your sentence above. Such as "ironic nuance," however that isnt the issue of discussion.

My question for you: Who would replace these starters if they were to retire, and then who would replace their backups? Would you be comfortable with that depth?

Some of you guys are going to get your hearts broken when TD holds out for another contract and he's forced to pursue it with another team.

I hate to say it but yeah, that's a possibility.

Davis has talked more than once about not wanting to end his career on a down note (i.e. the suspension).

I’ve been thinking the same...Kalils, Amini, Olsen, TD, Funchess, Captain, Peppers (although Pep can stay :)) probably all gone after this year.

Also, Rivera, Hurney but that’s another thread.

Funchess? I’ve been a Funchess detractor but he’s playing much better, catching between 2 and 3 defenders, so he needs to stay.

only way not is if we are confident to draft a replacement— but next year should be Oline and safeties galore for draft day,.. free agent receivers are getting over paid to death right now.

Rivera certainly isn't the only coach that hangs on to veteran players too long, but it's definitely one of his flaws.

I'm not sure if it's primarily due to sentimentality or lack of trust for younger players. I tend to think it's more of the latter. Sentimentality certainly wouldn't explain Amini Silatolu. Granted, Ron's not the world's greatest talent evaluator either.

I think in the majority of cases coaches don't trust the younger players and they can/do literally lose you games like Josh Norman against the Bills when he jumped the route by not playing the called defense as a rookie. That's one obvious example from our team and other teams have many such examples. But in Rons case we can see it's a combination of all that you said.

What we'll miss most is TD's attitude, toughness, inspiration. We won't miss his play nearly as much, but that's to be expected. Hope he finds a role with the team if that's what he wants next year...assistant D coach.

If he's interested, I would love to see TD get an opportunity as our LB coach.  I'm not sure we've yet come to grips with how important Al Holcomb was to the franchise, and if TD can replace what Holcomb brought, we'd be way ahead of the game.
