Irvin excusing it by saying he meant 89 wasn’t the type WR that QBs just lobbed up 50/50 balls too.  Yeah, he was a great route running  WR but he made guys like Jake Delhomme relevant because the 50/50 balls despite his height disadvantage was a YUGE part of his game.  

His jump ball highlight reel can compete with any big man.  89’s YAC, physical nature and the fact he could go up despite his size were literally his signatures.

Take Smitty away from the QBs he had here and put him on the Colts during the same era with Manning, in place of Marvin Harrison, and there's no doubt Smitty is at least second WR all time in yardage and every other stat if not first.

Good for Smitty. He's growing as a person, and was the bigger man in this case. He doesn't have anything to prove to anyone. He did way more with way less than Michael "I was on an entire team of HOF'ers" Irvin. Him refusing to let Michael Irvin slide made for entertaining TV, but squashing the mini-beef was the right play and better for both of them long term. I have more respect for Steve Smith the person now. He'll always be the greatest offensive Panther, but it's nice to see him turning into a happier person off the field as well.
