The Symbiosis Of Davis and Kuechly

I know I've been really disappointed with Shaq's four game audition to replace TD. So much so that I'm almost hoping we yank his 5th year option to free up that nearly $10M to chase a pass rushers in free agency.

When we are in Base, David Mayo was the one replacing Thomas Davis. In those formations is when I have seen the most issues. While Shaq hasnt been TD, playing with David Mayo at outside linebacker is just a bad personnel decision, especially with Carter available to bring up. Mayo may be serviceable at the Mike but not outside.

Carter may be the answer one day, but you might notice in the "highlights" from Sunday it was Carter who lost Barkely on the pass from OBJ.

I think Luke and Shaq are spending too much effort on trying to cover for the lack of Davis. And it's not because Shaq isn't able to take over for Davis so much as it is that the dropoff from Shaq to Mayo (and others) is just huge.

If we get it back to Shaq - Luke -TD we'll see a much more dominant defense. And having the club's Enforcer back on the field will push the needle quite a bit back in our favor.

That isnt a normal play to reference. He lost his responsibility but David Mayo couldve tried to keep up with Barkely and still been left behind.

You realize of course that Mayo and Carter are essentially the same player yes?

Carter Pro Day -

40:  4.68

Shuttle:  4.28

3 Cone:  7.19

Mayo Pro Day -

40:  4.75

Shuttle:  4.33

3 Cone:  7.15

Rookie made a rookie mistake.  Had he not made that mistake, he would have essentially had the same chance as experienced player to not be left behind.

Fortunately, we have Davis coming back to make it a moot point.

There is quite a difference between a 4.68 and a 4.75 on the field. The shuttle is also quite different. I watched David Mayo at Texas State because he reminded me of Clay Matthews with the hair and tenacity he showed. One game I saw he had the teams first 8 tackles or something like that. However, he isn't suited to play OLB any more than Kuechly was when Jon Beason still manned the middle.

However, the point was that Shaq Thompson wasn't really the issue in Base Defense. There is a huge drop off from Shaq, Kuechly, and Davis to Shaq, Kuechly, and Mayo. While Shaq isn't quite the nickel backer everyone has wanted to see, the majority of issues I've witnessed have come in base defense. @Saca312 could provide a short film study on the matter i'm sure. He probably should actually because many people are wondering what impact the return of Davis will have on the 2018 Iteration of this defense.

The fact of the matter is that we are 3-1. We got 3 wins in 4 chances without what I consider to be our best defensive player, if for no other reason than the intangible impact he has on the entire team. I know he isn't better than Kuechly or more important to the second level than KK but Davis has immense impact in offensive game plans which should free up some defensive linemen for more one on ones.

TD won’t be around forever, what’s the longer term plan?

To not let Mayo play OLB. Groom Carter to be his replacement as Carter would've been a draft pick if not for his injury last season. Extend Davis one more season and give Carter time to marinate. Sign Shaq back based on production and then you still maintain the level of athleticism at the second level that the Panthers have had for some time.

Redskins are going to be tough matchup. Everything tonight was setup to be the Saints night, but I have watched several Skins games and this was an anamoly.

We can win, but it ain't going to be this easy.

And regardless of what some posters think we should be doing (i.e. blowing teams out), we just need wins this time of the year and to stay healthy.

It's a long season... nobody is writing the Packers or the Patriots off this early, and they certainly haven't looked like world beaters or even as good as us.

Any game in that dome is setup for them to win. Been that way for 13 years now.

    • I think in all honestly, the final 2 games are carrying most of the weight in a lot of Bryce talk IMO.    During the window where he "blew it out of the water" window......were a lot of games where he was not above average.  AZ is largely one of those stat sheet games.   Where the stat sheet reflects QB play that didn't exist in the game.  That game was all Chuba.  Meh vs Dallas.  Meh vs Philly.  Meh vs Giants.  Probably average vs Tampa, Den, Saints.  Bryce made HUGE strides vs what he was.  We should be happy.   But when you start comparing him to the rest of the league.....people I think are going too far.  His best aspect in reality.....is his scrambling.  And that's probably not a great thing give his size.
    • Mays and Zavala looked lost in the Reich offense.  Granted Zalava was probably playing too soon due to injuries but he looked terrible.  This new staff seems to be doing well with our OL.  I also wonder if having two vets in Hunt and Lewis just made life that much easier on whoever was/is playing center.
    • What the Panthers should target in order (via free agency or via trade): 1. Julian Blackmon  2. Mike Hilton 3. Jaire Alexander 4. Jalen Ramsey
