Eric Washington: Something to think about

Mr. Scot

Maybe.  It’s definitely possible.   However I think Rivera will be less tolerant of bad defense than he was bad offense.

And he might not even have to fire him to do that.  He could always take over defensive play calling.

I've seen that confirmed in a couple of places.

It was a group of minority owners pushing for the Steelers to dump Tomlin. Tepper was named as a member of the group. There's no confirmation as to how involved he was or whether he was one of the main people behind it.

I'm starting to believe Ron's working on getting himself canned for one of many reason Mr Scot but mainly when Tepper comes out and states we need to use analytics to people who don't use them. Ok that was a small thing to start off but when your head employee Ron doesn't take your advice (4 inches from 50 analytics says go for it 99% of the time what does Rongo out and DO the opposite. A lot of the other errors were in game human mistakes fumbling by a rookie a in accurate pass to the end zone but knowing analytically what to do after I said use analytics to make the best decisions and you still ignore that could sent like a stubborn man who won't adjust so the only answer is to get someone who'll listen to your one main objective input on your own company.

One thing I know for sure: The beat writers and analysts who this past offseason talked about how being the Panthers defensive coordinator was an easy path to a head coaching position and speculated whether Eric Washington would be next in line are probably scouring the internet trying feverishly to delete those articles right about now.

And I wonder if we can get McDermott back next season on the cheap? Then just line everyone back up to where they should have been.

I know some people were critical of how aggressive Wilks was with blitzes, but in hindsight, in contrast to Washington, Wilks looked like the Bill Walsh of defensive coordinators.  Washington is horrible...

I keep thinking back to yesterday on a critical 3rd down, and he called some sort of zone blitz which on the replay showed Addison ended up matched up with Richardson (IIRC) in coverage and Thomas Davis sitting in a shallow zone completely unable to help.  I just dont understand wtf he is thinking from play to play...  not to mention how we get gashed non-stop on the run.  It feels hopeless.

The defense ins't playing to the level that we are accustomed to...however.

To go on the road, against a veteran QB, and commit 3 turnovers, only for your defense to surrender 23 points?

I mean...that's not all bad.  Like I said in another thread, we are 20th on the road in points scored on offense...we must do better than that.

I've said previously that I think it will take Eric Washington some time to adjust to his new job.

Some would argue he's had plenty of time by now, and I accept that the point is debatable. That's not so much my topic here, though.

To the folks who don't believe it's a transitional issue, to those who believe he just isn't cut out to be a defensive coordinator, I have a question that I'm afraid likely isn't going to make you feel any better.

How many years did it take to fire Mike Shula?

I believe Rivera sees Washington as something of a protege'. Obviously, he didn't see Mike Shula in that light. If this is true, then he may be more "forgiving" of Washington (though it could be argued that he was plenty forgiving of Shula).

The point: As long as Rivera remains head coach, I'm not so sure anyone wanting Washington fired or demoted is going to have their voice heard. I could be wrong, and Rivera might not be that attached, but that's just my gut.

And if I'm right about that, we'd all best hope that he really is just going through some growing pains and he'll "get there" at some point.

We'll see.

Same could have been said about Richard Rodgers. We went through a year and a half of pain till the press started to push hard on Ron

If this D doesn't get a lot better and do it quickly, this season is probably going to spiral down the drain and I'm not sure Ron and company will survive that with a new owner in place who may be itching to put his own people in place to truly out his stamp on the organization.

I think Ron is a great guy and I think he's a better coach than most, but if I was him I wouldn't be feeling cocky about my job security.

If we don’t make the playoffs this year then I would be ok with blowing this whole thing up. We have possibly 3/4 people  retiring and a reboot may be needed anyway
