FYI: the panthers have no cap space

I'm still waiting on the Saints to fall apart because of cap reasons (7 years still waiting).     Somehow, they don't.    Call it talented GM or better coaching with less or whatever, but yeah.     If a team wants to spend, they can spend.    We have one of the richest owners in the league as well.

It's called having Drew Brees as your QB.

Brees is going to go down as one of the best QB's to ever play the game...like top 3 to 5.

Been seeing a lot of people asking why we aren’t making a move and trading for player  x, y or z?

why?

We don’t have the cap space, we used our extra cap space on slapping together a make shift offensive line and signing Reid. Which is what we needed to do.

Our current salary cap sits at: $239,000

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/carolina-panthers/cap/

we ain’t signing no one, or trading for anyone.

Aside from the cap, I think we need to improve what we have.  In our biggest areas of need, there will be no trades.  Let Reid, Smith, and Wright learn the system and develop chemistry with teammates.  Let Van Roten and Moton gain experience.  Samuel is slowly  being developed and Moore is getting better.  Thomas at TE is going to improve.

I really don't see bringing in a new player right now.

That's fair, but it's kind of hard to say that the Saints have done a great job of building around him. They have one Super Bowl yes, but outside that just a couple of decent seasons and a run of some bad seasons over the past several years to show for it.

The Patriots have garnered much more success by spreading their cap around rather than leaving certain areas of the team so weak that you needed a phenomenal effort elsewhere to cover for them. Sometimes the Saints got that phenomenal effort, but they frequently didn't. And of course the Patriots always knew that even if a certain area of their team was week, they had superior coaching to compensate.

Heck, some teams take it even farther. The Lions old strategy was to pay two or three superstar players (Barry Sanders, Herman Moore,  Henry Thomas) and then skimp on the rest of the team. I can't really say I've ever seen that strategy work. The Saints aren't quite that bad, but they took a similar approach for a while after 2009 and didn't look that great.

If not for having such a phenomenal draft a little while back, they might still be struggling.

That is why the Giants kept Michael Strahan for so long.  When he was on the roster, they always had gap space.

I will be performing at the Comedy Zone in their parking lot this weekend.  No tickets required.  Thanks for reading.

Dammit, dude :eyeroll:

The next two years won't be fun offseasons people.

Here's a look at people who's contracts are up next year:
Ryan Kalil (retiring and UFA)
Thomas Davis (retiring and UFA)
Pep (retiring again? UFA)
Mike Adams (retiring? UFA)
CJ Anderson
Marshall Newhouse
Eric Reid
Devin Funchess
Wes Horton
Fozzy Whittaker
Colin Jones
Kyle Love
Chris Clark
Amini Silatolu
Ben Jacobs
Daryl Williams
Taylor Heinicke
David Mayo
CAP
Manhertz (RFA)
Byrd (RFA)
Norris (RFA)
Cox and Obada are both ERFA

2020 UFAs:
Addison
Torrey Smith
Cockrell
Searcy
Shaq
Bradberry
Van Roten
Hawkins
Seymour

We're gonna need cap flexibility just to stay afloat. Bad contracts on guys like Matt Kalil and Munnerlyn are hurting us right now. One could argue that the last thing we need to do is to make things harder in the next few years on us financially.

Good post.    Here is what I would do, knowing what we know now:

Here's a look at people who's contracts are up next year:
Ryan Kalil (retiring and UFA)
Thomas Davis (retiring and UFA)
Pep (retiring again? UFA)
Mike Adams (retiring? UFA)
CJ Anderson  (doubt he returns, so I let him walk and draft RB depth late)
Marshall Newhouse (If you love something, set it free...)
Eric Reid (Sign to a 3-4 year deal, move to SS)
Devin Funchess (If he wants top WR money, bye bye--our  developing WRs are getting better and we can find a WR who can get us 60 yards a game and drop 2 balls.)
Wes Horton  (resign Horton.  He is a solid, rotational player)
Fozzy Whittaker  (With Samuel, CMC, not a real need)
Colin Jones  (Solid special team player, but is he worth a jersey?-- I find a young, cheaper version--bye Jones)
Kyle Love  (Love just keeps getting better.  He is getting old, but I find another 1-2 year contract)
Chris Clark (re-sign at vet minimum for depth)
Amini Silatolu (Release him, then consider a public execution at the square--he blocked a long snap--the only thing he blocked in a panther uniform)
Ben Jacobs  (He is old and I never notice him, even in the preseason.  How does he have a career?)
Daryl Williams  (I re-sign him, but only if he has good work ethic and a solid prognosis--see Otah, Jeff)
Taylor Heinicke  There are some solid QBs in the  draft.  Heinicke gets a vet min deal because he knows the system.
David Mayo  (We have Smith behind him and he is more athletic and versatile.  Mayo needs to be an ILB in a 3-4.  Set him free too)
CAP  (Nothing to see here)
Manhertz (RFA)  (Not interested)
Byrd (RFA) (Not sure we need him any longer, with Samuel and Moore.  Bye)
Norris (RFA) (Special Teams beast and decent depth--yes)
Cox and Obada are both ERFA  (Yes to both)

2020 UFAs:
Addison--Addison is 32 or so now. Not sure he will be good in 2020, which is why our first round pick should be a DE.
Torrey Smith Smith will be moving along in 2020.
Cockrell  Want to see him play first.

Searcy  I do not see him as more than depth, but as depth, why not?
Shaq  I am still not sold on this guy
Bradberry  Most underappreciated player on the team.  He gets extended.
Van Roten  He hustles and is effective.  I like him as a player.
Hawkins  Not a bad special teamer and depth player.
Seymour  will not be on the roster at the time.

Personally, I think we will have money--want to cut M Kalil, sign Williams and Clark, and move Moton to LT.   Not sure I would re-sign Funchess but I would sign Reid (26) to play SS for the next 3-4 years.  Ryan's salary, Peppers' salary, Davis...there should be some coin on the table.   Marty as the GM scares me though--he loves to reward veterans.

We could easily create cap space if we wanted. And no it wouldn't strap us down the road. We have several players with big cap hits leaving in the next 2 years and first year cap hits on new contracts are always cap friendly. But look at how many trades Hurney has made during the regular season and you have your reason why we aren't trading for anyone unless we have an injury and have to trade for someone.
