Al Wallace: Newton "begging for help"

Mr. Scot

If the staff has been pushing Cam to play over the advice of medical professionals then they all need to be fired.  However . . .

My general impression is that Cam has, until now, wanted to play and told the staff he's fine.  Cam himself told us that the doctors can't actually find anything wrong.  I think (I hope) that Cam's press conference was him finally realizing that he is not the best option for the team at this point.

To me, this alone is enough to fire Rivera.  Rivera was putting this off on the doctors, and we have no idea what their diagnosis is.  Just like he puts losses off on coordinators and players.  Apparently, he makes bad decisions regarding personnel as well as game management decisions.  Remember in 2016 RR let Cam play hurt after we were eliminated.  No respect for RR.

I said a while back that Rivera and his morons had wasted and ruined the greatest on-field asset this organization has ever had, and it's unforgivable.  It's 100% true.

When you pull your "strong--armed" QB and put in a small reserve QB to throw a hail mary--you know something is wrong.  When Cam was underthrowing--something he never does--he should have been pulled.  Regardless of what the doctors or Cam says, a coach and his coordinator should be able to physically see the problem.  Rivera was simply whipping his horse to death without regarding tomorrow's ride.

Yep.  And they are doing it to Luke and CMC as well.   Cam is elusive and a run threat, so they did not give him a top OL.  He throws high a lot, so they got big WRs, not considering that they take longer to get open and that increases hits/sacks.

We can't see how stupid Rivera is most of the time, but if his game management reflects his football acumen, then his decisions should scare us all.

For the first time in 8 years, I am researching QBs in mock drafts.  Our QB is 29.

Cam, like most players, are going to say they're fine, let them play, etc.

And it's the coaches, GM, etc. who must step in and tell them no.  If the report that Cam wanted to play and wouldn't sit in 2016 is true, shame on Rivera and the staff.  Don't repeat the same mistakes....man up, and tell Cam he has to sit even if he's trying to say the right things and play.

There’s no way, a Dr. has recommended for #1 to shut it down and coaches and or Newton ignored that advice. No way.

I don't think so either. Doctors are probably telling them that he can't get hurt any worse by playing so they keep rolling him out there. But he needs time to recover and the season is over... It should start immediately

No need for doctors or even Cam to say he needs to sit.  The fact that he can't throw the ball more than 10 yards  is reason enough to bench him.  Everyone knows he's hurt, including the other teams we play.

If a doctor does recommend him to sit that should be sufficient enough to warrant Cam to be pulled. A doctor does have a say in the matter if it has to do with that players health but someone has to be held accountable and be mindful of what that doctor has recommended to prevent further injury. The HC and even Tepper should listen to these recommendations and see that this is followed or we will lose Cam permanently.

I agree.  I'm just making the point that it's obvious Cam doesn't need to be playing.  Him playing is not helping anything.

It's all about the medical staff. If the medical staff says "yes", Ron will start Cam. But if the medical staff says "no", then Cam is benched.

It's sad, but Cam is crazy enough to believe he's actually Superman & say "I'm good, Coach". I say let him rest, but if medical staff & Cam both say "yes", Ron is crazy enough to start him.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
