Their offense was actually good this yr

We've pissed off the football gods something awful. QB has MVP type year, defense is trash, we finish 7-9(this sounds....familiar). New Orleans might win Super Bowl in Atlanta.

Not even Stephen King could come up with such horror for Atlana fans.

After being fired as Buccaneers head coach on Sunday, Dirk Koetter is considered the front-runner to land the open offensive coordinator position with the Falcons, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

It would be a return trip to Atlanta for Koetter, who served as Falcons offensive coordinator from 2012-14.

Falcons are setting up several interviews for the position and they could hire their next coordinator soon.

That's an article from D Orlando Ledbetter, Atlanta paper Falcon's beat writer. Has the same reputation for accuracy that David Newton does here.

I know I'm just trying to console myself about being stuck with Rivera for another year, but I feel slightly less bad about it with each HC vacancy that opens up.

With over a quarter of the league's teams needing a new head coach, good candidates will be very hard to come by. And the situation we'd be offering a candidate sucks compared to some of what other teams can offer: Uncertainty around the franchise QB's health, picking at #16, not a ton of cap space, and so on. Tepper's deep pockets could only do so much.

Still not much consolation, though.

Any new HC is going to be a "reach" since few, if any, will be retreads. Most fired HCs end up as coordinators elsewhere while coordinators are the next HCs.

Everyone is taking the same chance when hiring a HC, regardless how many of the 32 are canned.

To that end, people concerning themselves with changing coaches when there are 7 or 8 other teams doing the same should understand that every year since 2011 at least six HCs have been axed.  It's not like the norm is two and this year there are eight, while this year's number is higher, it is not mind-bendingly so.

For lousy organizations (or owners) or those wanting to pinch every penny, any number higher than usual is bad.  But assuming coaches don't have a red "X" painted on the fence in front of team HQ because the environment is so caustic and  the owner is willing to pay, I don't know that six or eight vacancies matters.  There are more candidates than that roaming around out there, and let's face it, there will be some teams make head scratching hires that won't delete the talent pool one bit, and may increase the talent of the average coaching candidate go up by their absence.
