Tepper has "no idea" whether Cam Newton needs surgery

A bit of "reading between the lines" here (though not all that much)...

One thing that's clear in this is that if Newton isn't available next year, that does not turn next year into an expendable season.

We're not tanking a season so that we can start over with Newton the following year. They are still going to try just as hard to win next year as any other season.

Whatever fallout there is from that will be dealt with in 2020.

We may not intend to tank, but if Cam is out, even with seemingly a lot of veteran FA options and draft options, the reality may be that we have a below average QB next year and look more like the second half of the year than the first...

I've seen people suggesting that if Cam can't go next year, they'll just tank. That's not how it works.

The team doesn't exist to serve any player, not even the quarterback. Just the opposite: The players are here to help the team.

When one of them goes down, they don't ask the other sixty or so to put their careers on hold while the one guy heals.

Next year still counts.

I'm kinda thinking just have him rest and rehab for the next year and plan on him coming back in 2020. We can roll with Allen this year and either suck and get a high draft pick or he plays well and we have 2 great QBs on the roster, could trade one or have insurance for Cam. Not the worst strategy...

Doing that might be inevitable but also worse case scenario. No one knows if he will make a full recovery like Luck. Secondly sitting him costs us 23 million for nothing with no guarantees. We still need a starting quarterback and I think putting your faith in an UDFA is risky as best. I suspect we go for a good free agent or draft one in the first 3 rounds. Maybe we do both.  Standing pat isn't going to happen. The problem is no FA like Foles will want to come here to be a backup and his price tag would be 20 million or more if Philly doesn't exercise their option for 2019. That would mean over 40 million just for a QB which isn't happening.

Foles might. To part ways he actually gets $18 million. That’s his.

if he signs for $15 million he’s making a lot, plus he starts.

contracts can always work out to grow as so many.

if the staff thinks Cam is best case 50/50 and worst case done I think you would have to consider it.

The last thing anyone should want is opening up Cam's throwing shoulder again. Every time you do that there is a big risk of it getting worse.

Cam could be done, folks. It may just be a reality that his shoulder just cannot take the stress of a full season. But if he isn't done and can continue, opening up his shoulder again could ensure he is done.

It's a gamble either way, but maybe best to err on the side of no surgery.

What? How can Cam possibly continue with the same shoulder we saw in 2018, ie no surgery?

They're tagging and trading him, seems almost certain.

That is a big gamble on the Eagles part. What if no one wants to give you that much. Only way it might make sense is if you could negotiate a long range contract. Apparently they still see Wentz as the guy despite the injury issues. I wonder how Foles would feel about not starting and being in a constant quarterback controversy.
