Wow seeing where Smith is on the list just makes me sick to be a Panthers fan.

Smith is what makes you sick?  Not having the number 2 most expensive DL, and number 6 most expensive LB group, and getting next to zero production?

But Smith's 5 mil is what crosses the line.  Not the fact that the only team in the entire NFL that spends more on their DL are the Tampa Bay Bucs.  Yet we definitely don't have a top tier DL.  That is what makes me sick.  The 5 mil from Smith isn't even on my "makes me sick" radar.

Kalil FTW!

where does all the smith love come from?  i don't get it.  1 important catch?

I don't think anyone loves Smith. Why would anyone? My thing is is that I just don't believe that last season was a solid indicator of his value due to bad circumstances (injury to Cam, injury to Smith, and Turner trying to figure out how to run this offense). At the end of the day, I don't think that his 5 mil salary is something to be blown out of proportion (as Hurney haters do), and this is especially true when there is an eject button before the season begins. It was the smart move to make pre-draft and pre-free agency, particularly in light of our situation at receiver,  regardless of how much people want to cry about it. It was totally understandable. But, if we had decided to cut him, that would have been totally understandable too, especially if there was a specific plan in motion to replace him. Anyone that can't understand that, just doesn't want to understand. There's really no need to go to extremes about it one way or another at this point, but of course that happens here.

There isn't really any love for Smith from a fan perspective. He hasn't earned it. But if he actually gets a mulligan, maybe he can earn at least a little respect. If not, there won't be any love lost when he is finally cut.

5 million for a veteran receiver that is more than capable to be a starter, when healthy, is peanuts, especially since there is no guaranteed money.

He is a perfect veteran.

I don't think you'll find anyone that will say they were impressed by last season, but let's not pretend it's his fault for his injury, and the struggles the team had as a whole.

If this thread was about other people on the list then I would agree but I think the post is about smith:thinking:

That’s how you deflect from saving money with an obvious decision. It’s amazing that people complain about no production from our LBers yet $5m for a WR4 makes perfect sense.

Or I am questioning a gross exaggeration?

If contracts can make you sick to be a fan..yet you weren't already sick after looking at the contracts/production of Short/Poe/Kalil/Thompson..I just find it interesting that 5m for Smith is what crosses the line.

There's still a question I have yet to see anybody really answer.

Most of the Smith defense has been "well, his salary isn't guaranteed and we can still cut him".

But if we don't, and his veteran salary becomes guaranteed as of week one, will you still be praising this as a good deal?

    • WR: Nico, Woods, Tank (R) TE: Schultz OL: Tunsil/Howard/Deiter/Mason/Fant vs. WR: Chark, Thielen, Mingo (R) TE: Hurst OL: Icky/Zavala (R)/Bozeman/Jensen (R)/Moton   Panthers' had the better OL before losing BC week 1 and AC week 4 which is kind of ironic considering how in the following year DB went down in W1 and Shaq in W4 resulting in the defense going all to Hell. CJ has done amazing in Houston, but he also wasn't asked to carry Zavala, Jensen, Mingo, Hurst, and Chark as a rookie.
    • Past 5 seasons, IMO CJ Stroud and Joe Burrow are the 2 best young QBs that have emerged in the league in that window.  They also didn’t need vets to be their primary pass catchers.  They helped fellow youngsters be great at WR.   almost all the other young QBs have been paired up with vets in their top options….and haven’t been as promising.  so it isn’t Madden.  But the league hasn’t played out as you suggest it does.   Good QBs make others around them better.
    • In 2023 their roster wasn’t stacked. They nailed the poo out of the 2023 draft and since they knew Davis Mills wasn’t the guy, they tanked properly to get pick 2. They also took Cleveland’s ridiculous offer for Watson unlike us with Burns. Houston received enough draft capital to jump up to 3 while picking up the right guys in Anderson and Stroud. The Texans were not stacked or better than us in 2023. They had 11 total wins from 2020 to 2022. They didn’t have a terrible front office so they made sure they got their QB of the future while tanking well and getting more draft picks. They are a textbook study of what we should have done in 2022/2023 offseason even though people in here still think tanking is a bad word and our culture would be bad if we were the Texans. We literally had the chance to be the Texans right now and fuged it up.
