Wait....is this complimenting Joe Person????

robot wtf GIF

But still very interesting of a read.

After reading his articles with the Athletic, I completely believe it's the Observer's fault for the lack of quality content they have. Also the Athletic is completely worth it. You get access to all kinds of articles like this one.

Very interesting. However,  it makes me wonder why we did not get this type of info when he was at the Observer.

Because he doesn’t have to cover the day to day BS as much now and can write good features. I know everyone hates Joe but he’s a good writer

Good thread.

This is what you hope happens in the decision-making process.  The people involved fight like he11, and out of it comes a vetted, fully-aware decision.  Ultimately, somebody has to make the call, but they need to know everything available when they do.

People would be amazed at the number of organizations where the underlings (scouts in this case) sit there and nod out of fear that "the boss doesn't want to hear this."  Sometimes, they may not want to hear it, but they need to.

Whether this was a unique situation in Panther history under JR is another story.  Cam Newton probably came along at exactly the right time for it to happen: new coach/era and everybody wanting to move on from the ashes of the previous year and QB debacle.

Newton is a once in a lifetime player. He’s already done so many incredible things that make you believe in a Superman, or at least the “Unbreakable/Glass” version.

that being said— I’m happy we helped the Oline, happy we have speedy receivers—happy Moton is the real deal,..

can we please get the guy some more REAL oline help?

maybe then we can see more of 2011-2016 Cam and no more of 2017-2018 Cam,.. that guy needs to die!

2018 Cam was pretty good before his shoulder exploded

Good stuff there. I really did feel we were going to draft Gabbert or even AJ Green that year. So glad we didn't (though AJ Green teaming with Smitty would've been totally kick ass).

I'm glad Ron, Chud & Shula decided to use a read-option scheme for Cam instead of trying to force him to adjust to Pro style. Too many coaches & offensive coordinators used to do that back in the 90's & 2000's. Very wise to use a scheme Cam was already used to so he could use the talents he already had & help him develop more as a passer.

When Cam is 100% healthy & has good protection, he's unstoppable. Very wise draft pick by Ron & Hurney.

Oh, and NFL draft scouts are usually garbage. So glad Ron called their bullshit & stuck with Cam.

I definitely don't hate Joe.

After reading this I get the impression that JR wasn’t aware that a football team needs a good qb in order to succeed.

There's some info from Tom Sorensen regarding Richardson in the article.

Oh I agree— sometimes in the hero stories the hero has to be brought down by injury or weakness to find their other strengths.

The redemption story happens when the hero gets their big powers back but is better because of their new found wisdom.

Cam had a much better and smarter ball placement and delivery for short to medium passes that we’ve ever seen from him and much better touch.

he can put all that together with Superman coming back and we would be talking about what he does next until we all very old.

One other thing worth mentioning from the article...

Peter King regrets how the "icon and entertainer" tweet wound up framing  Newton. King says he wishes he would have worded that differently.

Darlington mentions that story as being one that hurt Newton's feelings a lot and made him a little gun shy regarding the media.

The extreme polarizing aspect of the Cam Newton pick is why I really don't care for the overbearing fanatic aspect of college football. Those kids aren't even getting paid for that. I'm talking about disliking a college ball player so much that you continue that into their NFL career just because you can't admit being wrong.

Tbh I don't think the way Cam Cam Newton was treated/received would be any different if he were drafted this year or in 2011. Maybe people need to rethink some things on how they view people and use stories like Cam's as a way to prevent other kids coming out of college from getting sabotaged from the jump just because.

Darlington needs to be rehired and the head of scouting

If he got a payout like I think he did, he's probably just relaxing.

As I recall, his "star was rising" before he departed from the team. There was never any mention of his being fired or resigning that I saw, but one year he was in the media guide and the next he wasn't. The time frame fits the SI story.
