REPORT: Panthers interested in Gerald McCoy

Recommended Posts

Always have to take the "I want to sign with a contender" talk with a grain of salt.  Everyone wants that.  Richard Sherman was loudly proclaiming that as well when he left Seattle.  Then signed with the 49ers.

That being said, I'd love him here.  I think a ton of people are lowballing Carolina, pretending like the 6-2 start with a healthy Cam Newton didn't happen.  Think losing Funchess is a big deal.  I still think we are solid contenders (assuming key people stay healthy, which is what any contender has to hope for).

I just don't think we can engage in a pricing war with a bunch of other guys that want him.  Browns still have like 33m+ left over.  Ravens are probably tighter than us though (after our Kalil June cut money comes through).

I really hope we sign him here. With the Kalil money opening up soon, we can fit him in, and still have money to add a FS if we want.

We fit the bill as a 'contender' and something that he didn't mention, but I'm sure a player of his caliber and drive -- the ability to face his former team 2X a year.

A front seven of :

                       McCoy - Poe - KK

       Addison - Kuechly - Shaq - Irvin/Burns

Yes, please.

I think some of it is that these guys are confident enough in their abilities that they think their presence alone can make a team a contender.

Agreed on the Panthers. With an improved (on paper at least OL) and some added pass rush juice, if Cam is healthy I see no reason why we shouldn't be a lot closer to that 6-2 team of the first half of the season than that 1-7 team of the second half. Funchess is a bum. The guy had one fluke good season and three bum seasons.

We also don't have any idea how serious the interest is between McCoy and the Panthers. I suspect the fact we were linked to him initially is because we kicked the tires on a deal.

I will start seeing the smoke to that fire when he makes a visit to Charlotte.

Oh definitely.

To be honest, just being linked to players is a nice change of pace.  Feels like we went so long just never showing public interest in anyone.  Sure, there were reasons like salary cap hell.  And sometimes we'd still land a surprise (I did not see the Paradis signing coming at all).  But I like knowing that there are people putting out the due diligence work on someone, even if it doesnt work out.

Still in Baltimore. Good chance they sign him. His line coach from Tampa is in Baltimore and their defense remains highly rated. For him to come to us he needs to not sign in Baltimore. Depends on how impressed he is with everyone there. Hope he doesn't sign there but I am not sure about anything

Even if he doesn't sign with Baltimore I read we wasn't really interested. Just kicking the tires, as always by our front office

Yeah, I have a feeling we're done here.

Rapoport just tweeted a video saying he’s in Baltimore and right now it’s between the Browns and Ravens but if the money isn’t right for either party, the Panthers are the third team in the mix and that Carolina is closely monitoring his situation. Still hope and the interest is real.

    • the one thing this post has suprised me with is how much support there still is for young.  i dont understand why.  we had qbs before him that went to superbowls that lost support way quicker.  thr only qb we had had that started any number of games that played worse than young is clausen.  allen and moore played better and yet people still support him makes 0 sense to me
    • Again, can’t have a serious discussion if constantly wading through hyperbole. And you say that’s not really what was meant, but I tried to at one point get some folks to concede that he was physically capable of throwing a football 20yds just so we could get to a real discussion and they stuck with it. So I’m not sure your characterization is entirely accurate.
    • And this is his third year. As far as people not understanding things, I am not sure people accept how difficult it is to remake yourself from the ground up. Which he absolutely has to do to compete successfully at the NFL level.  He takes a step forward with the footwork and a step back when he is stressed and reverts to what always worked for him before. I will say it yet again, anyone that reached a level of success with their self taught technique but needed to rebuild to break through the limitations that imposed, will understand this. I don’t care what specific activity it is the same challenge. Muscle memory and comfort level fight against the new moves you are trying to train yourself to do without thinking.  He is there. There is a ceiling with his technique that is too low for the NFL. He has to retrain himself.  We are in the third year and I guess we are supposed believe that he will be so good  when he finally gets to where the new will be second nature, that we have to wait (how many more years) for him to finish doing it. If he ever finishes.  The sad fact is he will not succeed at the NFL level with his horrible college footwork and compensation moves like the tippy toe drop backs. He just won’t.  If he can’t put that on the table for us, we would be foolish to not seek an alternative plan.
