The Difference? Missed Field Goal.

FG is the difference in the score, we fumbled inside scoring range (DJ) and then the backwards pass set up a TD. Three and out after Bradberry's INT.

We forced two Gurley fumbles and couldn't recover one. There was a ton that went wrong.

This summed it up perfectly - luck was not on our side, combined with some poor playcalling from Norv/Ron

And the "lateral" that was ripped that they scored on. .....

Yeah, that was bs. Once it was tipped, it should have been an incomplete pass.

Also, the pass that was caught, but then fumbled, but then incomplete, but then complete and fumbled but maybe down....

So much sloppy play because many starters sat out preseason.   You can’t have it both ways - risk starters in preseason or have them come out week 1 and play drunk.

Yup.  Turnover margin was 3-0 in favor of Rams.  Almost guarantees a loss.

On that note, since the stat has been kept NFL teams with a 4+ turnover margin in a game were 177-6 prior to yesterday.  Now 177-7 after jets coughed up a 16-0 lead going into Q4 and lost to our friends the Bills.

If it was Gano that missed that and we lost by 3 we'd definitely be hearing about it but Slye isn't being paid as much and I guess the huddle will go him a pass for now. I'm cool with that.

It was the first FG attempt of his career, and it was from 50 plus yards.  Im sure he was super nervous.  After that miss though, he was completely solid, booming kick offs, and splitting the uprights on the rest of his attempts.  Slye is going to be a good one, Im not really worried about the K situation right now.

Huh?  It was a 3-2 turnover margin.

I just watched the game again and here are some things that really stuck out to me.

The Rams had two phenomenal punts in the first half that really helped keep us on a long field. (68 yard punt, 55 net) (63 yard punt, 52 net)

The back breaker was the drive following Bradberry's interception.  We had all the momentum at this point.  We had just blocked the punt and scored the TD to make the game 23-20.  The ensuing Rams drive ends with the Bradberry interception and the Panthers were in business to take control of the game.  The offense was starting to click at this point in the game.  We then inexplicably try to break the mold and do two things we hadn't done all game.

1st down - Designed run for Cam, only the 2nd of the game, and the first one was stuffed, as was this one.  I just don't get this play call at all.  Not at all.  CMC had been a beast all game.  Why are we leaning on surprise as an advantage when we can just stuff arguably the best RB in football down their throat 10 different ways and save a hit on Cam in the process.

2nd down - They remember McCaffrey is on the team and check down to him for 5 yards to get into a manageable 3rd down.

3rd down - We dial up the only true deep ball of the day.  On the most critical play of the game, the point where the Panthers must convert to keep momentum, where a TD takes the lead or a FG ties, we ask Cam to make the play he hasn't even attempted all day.  A winning team goes for the 1st down here and keeps the chains moving.  Not us...we dial up a low percentage play and hope Cam is ready to make the pass he hasn't been asked to make in nearly a calendar year.

Honest evaluation, we didn't even make the Rams play defense on this most critical drive.  Inexcusable from a coaching perspective.  The play calls just didn't give our guys much of a chance to make a single first down.  Sure, Cam hits that pass to Samuel and it's a different conversation, and that makes it easy to blame Cam.  But why in hell are we testing Cam's deep ball on the most crucial play of the game???

The Rams score a TD on their next possession effectively putting the game out of reach.  Despite any conjecture about this game, this series was our opportunity to win and we poo the bed from the play calling AND execution perspectives.
