Week 1 passing chart

CRA

Recommended Posts

Only one attempt beyond 20 yards and 1/5 on 15+ yard attempts.

I also find it interesting that we were nearly perfect throwing to the left. Only one incomplete pass thrown to the left side of the field. Only one attempt of 15+ yards that was not to the right side of the field and it was the only one completed.

The one thing I need explained is how people say that Cam can’t throw it deep but then complain about that overthrow. He can throw it  deep no problem. He needs the opportunity to throw it deep. That’s going to come from play calling and protection.

25 air yards downfield is not really a deep throw. A true deep ball is usually 40+ yards. Cam used to fling the ball 50+ off his back foot. It looks like a struggle for him to throw 10 yard outs now.

Me and you must not have been watching the same game on Sunday.  His throws had plenty of zip on them.  He hit many throws that were on a line 10 to 15 yards down the field.  I have no doubt he can throw it 50+ if need be.  The deepest shot they took on Sunday was overthrown by a good bit.  Arm strength is not the issue anymore.  Now, accuracy and touch are a different story.

Loss of arm strength does not necessarily correlate perfectly to loss of velocity. It means you have to exert more effort to make the same throws and when you exert more effort that comes at the cost of accuracy and touch. You are much more in control throwing something at 80% effort than you are at 100% effort.

That's not how this works.

P.S. Weddle went out, and we still couldn't push the ball downfield.  I understand being careful, but when you lose a starter, at least attempt to go after their replacement.

Now, we don't know for sure if this was Curtis and DJ just not being able to shake loose at all, if Cam was just being cautious against a good (we think) team, part of the gameplan to keep the defense rested, or if Cam just cannot make those throws any longer with consistent accuracy.

Could be a combo of any and all, but it is worrisome either way.

This may have been by design or he’s scared. Thur game will tell us a lot.

Or I hate to say it, incapable. We've all seen him throw bombs to Curtis though. I just don't want to him force throw it deep into double coverage. If defenses are playing single high we need to pull that safety. That should be the game plan. I'll be extremely surprised to see this offense sustain success like this.

Overthrowing a mid or short ball has nothing to do with deep balls. Which he overthrew too.

    • I am no football savant as has been demonstrated here over and over, but I saw it.  I went for years doing the mock draft thing and researching the players that we might get around our pick, time consuming stuff. And we would get to the draft and trade the pick. All that time, wasted.  So I quit doing that. Also realized I was not a scout and would never be a scout and went to looking the videos and reports After  we picked a guy.  Maybe I would look at the 1st round, but quit that too and just looked after we picked.    When they did that trade I saw Bryce and his size and just ruled him out. Then it got to yeah they are probably going to take him, I relented and looked at some video and got to his pro day. It took me all of a few minutes to see the issues. The footwork. The arm. And the tape of games? The backyard style. I knew, what can I say?  (Also, went down the physical checklist, not a single plus attribute on the NFL level. Arm, speed, size, etc, nothing to offset the negatives. nothing)  I think it was easy for me because I had not watched a single game he played in college, and wasn’t drawn in by the hype. Had no preconceived notions and just looked at it pretty clinically.  I got in here and everyone was going “but look at what he did in college! It is the SEC, if he can do it in the SEC he can do it in the NFL!” Couldn’t reason with hardly anyone.  I don’t think I could tell you which guy would succeed between two prototypical guys with great arms and athleticism, and have no special insight into any of that. My one calling in football scouting was to see the real about what we were about to do. And you still don’t know for sure until they get in a real game in the NFL.
    • Miss Bryce sorely is possibly the most hilarious statement I have read on the Huddle in quite some time.
    • He did only throw 1 pass 20+ in that game. I think he is still struggling to adjust to the NFL. At Alabama he was able to extend plays and play backyard football. That's not only not the style of offense we have been running but his physical skills don't lend themselves to that style of play at this level.  So, the amount of issues he actually has to clean up are WAAAAAY more than I anticipated as a guy that had Bryce #1 on my board in that draft class.  I am just not seeing a reasonable path for him to clean it all up and develop in a reasonable timeframe
