Much quicker calls on offense, Action Jackson resembles Josh Norman, and more thoughts from yesterday

  • Did anyone else notice how much quicker the team broke the huddle with Allen under Center? There didn't seem to be as many hurried plays at the line. Because of that, there wasn't a need to waste timeouts

I didn't even think about this until now but that's a fantastic point. Cam's tortoise pace getting plays set up can be incredibly frustrating. The offense has trouble getting in a rhythm and we waste so many timeouts unneccesarily. Some of the clock management issues that people seem to pile on Rivera may be at least partially on Cam. And it's telling that the offense seems to play better when we're forced to do a hurry up (although Cam's hurry-up is like an average qbs normal pace).

But seriously does Cam really need to kneel down for 5 seconds, get up and breathe into his hands and rub them together for another for another 5, followed by a 5 second snap count on every play? Not to hate on Cam, he's an incredible player but I really hope he picks up 1 or 2 good habits watching Allen.

The tempo was also the biggest difference I noticed.  Not just getting off the play in time but getting to the line in time to allow CMC to flank out wide . . ID the coverage . . move back in.

I have always been perplexed by Cam's kneeling . . long exhale and sigh before standing up . . 10 seconds of meditation . . then getting the play started.  I think that is a piece of why we move the ball better in hurry up mode - not really catching the opponent off guard, but keeping a tempo the offense likes to play in.

It's a prayer Cam says before every play that he won't die from blindside sacks because he hasn't had a reliable LT since Gross retired.

Seriously though. Its very telling that an average QB who can comprehend data at a fast pace, understand the lingo of the play being called, relay it to the huddle and hury up to the LOS, is looking like a rock star compared to what we've seen from Cam since the super bowl.

I've been saying this since that game and the subsequent seasons, Cams time is over. It has been for a while.

I got blasted to bits on here when I recommended trading him for a package of 1st round picks and starting a rebuild the year after the Super bowl run. It was clear to me then just as it is finally becoming clear to others now, that he just doesn't have it anymore. It's well past time to move on from Cam and use a QB like Allen (maybe one a little more talented) and use these weapons appropriately.

One thing that has been frustrating is when newton breaks the huddle, he sits on a knee for like 5 seconds kind of taking his time. I’d have to go back and watch but is this a thing he has done his whole career or is it becoming a new thing for him? Really no sense of urgency it seems like.

Seems much more pronounced recently. It really stood out vs. Tampa Bay

The Cam kneeling in the huddle every play came about year 3 I believe.

Prior to that he would only kneel when he was tired (usually after scrambling or running) and he believed defense started to understand he was tired... so then he startes to kneel every play so they the defense wouldn't know if he was tired or not.

Not how I would have handled it but that was his explanation.

Doesnt help that Cam is always the last guy to the line, and seems like he needs a cane to get up off of a knee sometimes.  I have never understood why he does that every play?  Like, you're doing maybe 60 extra squats a game for no reason.  Wasted energy and movement, and all that stuff....

he has said if he does that when he's both tired and not tired the D won't know if he's tired or not.  i don't think he needs to do it anymore since he's not really running.

Gotta admit, when Shula was here I blamed him for not getting to the line on time and being forced to blow time outs.

When he left and it continued, I assumed it was a Ron thing and blamed him, I mean he's not the best game day coach so I assumed the blown time outs was an extension of that.

But if it continues to NOT happen while Allen is under center, then I don't know how you blame anyone other than Cam for this recurring issue. Not to say that it wasnt Shula's or Ron's fault a time or two, I'm sure it was, but I'll have to admit it's mostly a Cam thing if it stops happening while he's out. We'll see.

Kind of like the Alonzo Mourning free throw shooting routine. You could run take the bathroom and grab a beer in the time it took for him to shoot a FT.

A big part of that is it seemed Allen didn't do audibles at the line very often. I think his lack of experience actually led to being quicker to snap the ball. It seemed the center made the adjustments and Allen snapped the ball. How well that will work against a good defense is yet to be seen.

    • Biiiiiig eyeroll on this.  First, Look at historical stats of the most recent historical great DBs.  I plucked 3, Revis, Sherman, and Norman (cuzz he was our guy).  Combined post age 30, there are TWO pro bowls between those 3 and wanna get this...ZERO seasons with 16 games started.  ALL missed time.  It is RARE that Corners survive that long in the NFL and its about time we started recognizing this fact.  Jaycee is a good bet because it hasnt been anything seriously devastating injury wise, and with his sample size he could and should be an incredible piece for the panthers through age 30. Jaire kinda flops on the other side, hes 28...so hes under 30, but he wants his payday before it comes up, hes also been injury prone lately.  Bulk of the contract will be on opposite side of 30.  Will both of these guys help us be better in 2026?  SURE!  No doubt, but the question is, will these guys help us past 2026...not sure. The investment isnt worth the risk, nor would the ROI be anywhere close to worth it.  Neither guy is moving us from a 6-8 win team to a 8-10 team, period. My point is we're in this state a 6-8 win team IMO and he projects us as  a 4-6 win team.  EVEN if we think Jaire or Ramsey will make us a 6-8 win team, it in NO WAY is worth the money or capital to move that much just to suck kinda less.
    • I assumed he was retiring but apparently he plans on playing multiple more seasons.  Florida is gonna have trouble holding onto everyone.  Happens to all teams that have that much success.
    • I hate Marchand, but if he became a free agent.....
