Our defense is scary

This is easily the best defense we've had since 2013 and I think it might even be better than that one. Our corners were subpar that year and relied on a constant pass rush to succeed. This year, our entire defense is set. Our ILBs (Shaq and Kuechly) are balling out and Poe is eating up space as NT, but the pass rush depth is insane. We have EDGE defenders up the wazoo - Burns, Irvin, Miller, Addison, Haynes - but the hybrid defense means McCoy, Short, and even Vernon f*cking Butler could be screaming at you at any time. On the field we have 5-6 guys who are a legit threat to sack you at any point, and the best part is we don't even need to rush all of them. A huge portion of our sacks have been coverage sacks, meaning the quarterback had time to throw but nobody to throw to. This has been missing from our team from years. For once we don't need to dial up a blitz if we want pressure. We can actually trust our secondary to hold.

I really believe this defense is something special. We haven't won this type of game in years.

To hold two or the most mobile qbs in the NFL in Murray and Watson in check for most of the past 8 quarters is pretty damn impressive

Not to mention we held golf and Watson in check for most of those games as well, especially after seeing Winston light up the rams secondary today, our defensive performances thus far are on that "elite" status level

I believe we have the best defense in the NFC hads down. Bears a close 2nd.

AFC, Pats D is so fugging nasty. Yeah weak competition for most part but still holy fug they are straight up 2000 Ravens good at this moment and might end up being one of the best Defenses the NFL has ever seen if they keep it up but I do not think they will be able to though.

I’m starting to think it’s a 3-4 thing

works great if you pair it with an offense that can actually put up points. who cares if they can run if they are constantly playing from behind. shutting down the passing game + forcing them into a passing situation = profit... and tons of sacks apparently.

ILB play by Luke and Shaq has been outstanding, allowing this to thrive, but as much as any group, our secondary deserves the most credit.

So many of these sacks are coverage ones and that's something we haven't seen around here in a loooong time.

Good job Ron, you've got that defense on point.

    • Every time I see him on any media I immediately cringe.  He should not be considered any kind of expert at anything except maybe infidelity
    • I think Mike Evans is a good comparison production wise. Also Bryce is particularly good with touch throws which might help his #s as well.    Steve Smith is a top 10 WR all time. That won’t be eclipsed for a long time. DJ Moore is a great #1 WR as well but Steve Smith never got the chance to play with a QB that can extend plays in his prime. He also was historically under targeted by the running offense he played in.
    • I don't think this is his peak. For one, he's not always going to exist in a passing offense happy to just hit 3k yards. Even that aside, he'll learn routes better, get stronger, and adjust more to NFL speed in a way I think you'll see him improve quite a bit. He doesn't strike me as someone content with a season like this
