Talking Jaguars - Stats and Thoughts

Looking back at the game stats it looks like Fournette had some decent games for the first 3 contests, but absolutely exploded in the latest 4th game. 29 carries for 225 yards at 7.76 per tote is nothing to sneeze at.

If Fournettes going to get over 200 and over 5 ypc against us thats probably a bad sign. Especially since our run defense has been so poor this season.

He's not even the main problem either. Minishew is extremely good with 7 TD to 1 INT and their WRs can seperate. Dede Westbrook and DJ Chark were incredibly explosive down field threats in college and they're doing well this season it seems. The Jags rebuilt their WR core pretty fast after both the Allens went to other teams.

That being said this is an important contest for us to win. We're currently 0-2 at home and dropping to 0-3 at home and 2-3 overall would be a serious body blow to the momentum we've built up over the last 2 road wins.

If we win, we're 3-2 and probably in very good shape, especially if we beat the bucs before the bye in London too. Its really both of these next 2 games combined are extremely important to win if the Panthers have serious playoff aspirations.

The Run game is going to be the #1 thing to watch out for.

As much as everyone like to talk about the new QB.   They work that run game to carry the team

Rushing yards per game:

They are 6th

We are 24th in rushing yards D

Rushing Yards Per Attempt:

They are 2nd

We are 28th in yards given up per carry

Fournette IS having a good year.

Fournette so far this year.  3rd in yards per game at 101 rushing yards. At 5.6 yards per carry

In comparison

CMC so far.  1st in yards per game at 102.8 rushing yards at 4.8 yards per carry

We have given up 8 consecutive games of 100 yards rushing.  This week would make 9 which would be the franchise record for most consecutive 100 rushing yards games given up

We are without KK, they see that

They have a late round rookie playing in his 3rd game, and we lead the NFL in sacks

Expect them to run the crap out of the ball.

Lastly, their top 3 WRs are speed guys (4.3 guys).  As good a season Bradberry is having.  The speed guys are always his kryptonite.   So can easily see them hitting a deep shot off the playaction if the get that run game going

The Denver game was an anomaly for him with 225 rush yards with an 80+ yard run.

his other games were 66 47 and 66. Not saying he couldn’t do damage against us but he has not looked good minus the Denver game which skewed his stat line. Go to the jags forum and read up on what they’re saying.

we're the 24th ranked run defense in the NFL averaging 130 rushing yards per game against us. I'm not sure anyone should be banking on us limiting him to an average performance.

Yeah I agree but LF isn’t a finesse runner that we tend to have problems with. He’s a downhill power back. Typically the panthers do well against backs like that.

Notes:

Most concerning here is Sacksonvilles ability to get to the QB. Tied for 6th in the league is no joke. Let us hope Kyle Allen has quickly remedied his fumblitis.

Just a reminder...9 (9!) of Jacksonville's 13 sacks game in 1 game against the Titans on Thursday Night Football. Outside of that game, they've got ~1 sack/game.

Actually its the exact opposite

We normally struggle vs the power downhill guys and do well vs the finesse

See Coleman always tearing us up in Atlanta vs Freeman

Gurley is that Power back, he had 14 carries for 97 yards (6.9 yard avg) against us.

The power backs always kill us because they get to the 2nd level and the Boston's, Jackson's, etc cant tackle sh!t and the power guys run through the arm tackles

It’s pretty simple; they will run Fournette until we stop him. Our run D has been terrible thru four games so stopping their run is huge.

Our o-line has to keep Allen clean. There’s no way he fixed his fumbling problem in one week, their d-line will be hunting him all game.

Get the receivers involved early, CMC will of course be their main focus. Loosen their D up and make them defend everyone

Last but not least we need Ron to not screw anything up. Needs to be on top of his game.

Agree to disagree. I meant in general for this team the past couple of years we tend to lock up downhill power backs moreso than shiftier  guys. Freeman has destroyed this team in the past. I think the 34 might have something to do with it this year.

fournette is not agile and has had really bad vision. I suggest reading this thread from the fans that see him every Sunday.

“The problem is that he's only fast once he gets a head of steam. He is extremely unexplosive. There is a reason that he stopped after his impressive 40 yard dash and then his abysmal vertical leap at the combine. He was going to expose himself hardcore in explosion, short area quickness, and agility...and he knew it.

Remember all the predraft stuff about needing a runway and that insane stat about how LSU ran from under center like 83% of the time and on sweeps/tosses like 4x more than any other player in college? They knew you do not want Fournette to get the ball from a standstill. Give him those extra yards before getting the ball.

Oh yeah and the quote I constantly copy/pasted from Waldman's RSP about needing a fullback not because he needed the extra blocking help, but because he needed someone to follow to show him where the hole was.

He was always a square peg/round hole fit with the modern NFL. He might be a monster if you could transport him to the 80s. But alas.“

Yeah 2018 we were just an awful defense all around which is why I said the past several years where we were shutting down prime AP and Lynch but having a terrible time with shiftier backs. Jags have a pretty terrible o line and a back that isn’t shifty. If we can’t stop LF Sunday it’s gonna be a big pause for concern going forward against the run. Maybe we see more 4-3 looks this game.
