This 49ers Game Is the Critical Turning Point in Our 2019 Season

Everything is pointing towards this being the critical momentum shift game of the season, similar to last year's Pittsburgh game where the wheels just fell off afterwards. Do you agree?

I think if we win this game getting to 5-2 and beating the only undefeated team left in the NFC at their place would legitimize us as a contender and give the team confidence we can beat anyone else left on the schedule. 

Losing this game would mean dropping to 4-3, with all 3 coming from NFC opponents, which is terrible for wild card positioning. Not the end of the world to be honest but it leaves very little margin for error in remaining NFC matchups, with the next one being an away game AT Packers and at least 2 more coming against the Saints.

Biggest challenge seems to be the 49ers defense. We faced the #1 Rushing Defense in the Bucs last game where CMC ran into several defenders leaking through the backfield almost every run play (reminiscent of the first half of his rookie season in 2017); this game we go against the #1 Passing Defense in the 49ers, who also have a top 10 rushing defense. 

I've also heard the 49ers are getting BOTH of their starting OTs back. 

All I can really do is hope for the best, but I just have a really sick feeling of pre-game anxiety that doesn't happen often, IIRC it happened before Pittsburgh last year and before Super Bowl 50. I just want to be proven wrong for once and for us to win this pivotal game.

I don't know why, but I feel optimistic about the 49ers game.  I can see a lot of "dink & dunks" to McCaffrey, screens to Samuel/DJ, slants, etc.  This will hopefully offset that 49ers great pass rush.  Also, the 9ers run defense has looked suspect at times, which I think McCaffrey can get some opportunities.

The defense, as long as we can get a consistent pass rush, will hopefully make Jimmy G very uncomfortable.  The biggest factor, in my opinion, is stopping Coleman & Breida.  If we can stuff the run, I feel confident in our QB pressures & pass defense.

Overall, I think it'll be a close defensive battle with a ton of great defensive plays.  Hopefully we can keep the "turnover train" rolling this week!

Well, one silver lining if we lose.. They always say it’s hard to beat a team twice. So if we lose Sunday and face them again in the playoffs, the burden will be on them to beat us twice in a row.

FWIW, in 2013 we beat the Harbaugh 49ers at their house during the regular season then they ended up beating us in the playoffs in a rematch, I would definitely take that scenario in reverse this time if need be.

I said a few weeks ago that I was paranoid about another Steelers type game.

I'm probably not alone in that, and I think a lot of people a pegging this game as that possibility.

Granted, it could be, but it could also just as easily be a game that we lose and bounce back from.

It's certainly crossed my mind. If Little and Daley are both still out and they trot DW back out there at LT... oh wee mayne.

In a short 16 game season, every game is a "turning point".

I understand the tendency to see it that way, but imo each week is crucial if you hope to get in the playoffs and have a chance to compete for a Lombardi.

Having said that, I do think that a win on the road against an undefeated 49ers team with a great defense may help build confidence, and that's never a bad thing.

I don’t think this is some season defining game. I think the realistic goal is to find a way to win either the 49ers or GB game.  Beat Tenn.  Yeah, they would like to win all games.  

But if we could split this stretch of two road games and win the home game.  That is has us in good place.  2-1 over the next 3 and we are in good position.  The NFCS stretch is will make or break us and hopefully we have Cam then

      I feel like this trade just lives rent free in people's heads and keeps morphing into different things. First thing is that the rumored trade was for future firsts. They wouldn't have any extra picks in 2023; the firsts would have been for 2024 and 2025. With very few exceptions, NFL GMs don't value picks that far away. You have to have a lot of job security to pull that off. Like Chiefs, Eagles, Rams kinda stability. That's obviously not the case with David Tepper, especially since he'd just fired his head coach. No GM except for like Howie Roseman is going to trade an asset you have now for a future asset you probably get to use.  Second, at the time you'd have to assume these are first rounders late in the first round. Obviously currency is currency and the panthers need young players, but these weren't slam dunk top ten picks. At the end of the day there's one pick that separates a first and second round pick.  Lastly, the only place that ever reported this trade was the Rams. All the reporters just repeated what McVay said and it became gospel. We have no idea how serious the negotiations were, if they ever really happened, if the offer was real, etc. And I personally believe McVay and Sneed are the kind of guys who would make up rumors like that to fug up other teams, mostly because I assume if I've thought of it someone smarter than me has.  I don't know how you'd call it the greatest draft haul of all time. Firsts quickly lose their value the farther out they are and Burns had 16.5 sacks last season. And anyway those picks would probably just been tossed into the burning inferno of the Bryce trade up so it's a moot point anyway.
