Alright. How in the fug Do We Fix this Horrible Run Defense?

Its been a problem all season long and seems to be getting worse. Why is this happening when we have so much money tied in to the front 7 and supposed defensive mastermind head coach? Whats the excuse?

Panthers have traditionally been a defense that has been able to stifle opponent run games even when we're sucking overall as a team. It used to be the one thing we could hang out hats on. Now.. I'm not sure why but it's like the dline is just constantly getting stuck on blocks and turned the wrong way and all sorts of other fugery like they forgot how to play football. You shouldn't be paying grown men millions of dollars to constantly under perform against the run.

I don't know what happened to the run defense. That's usually one of the Panthers strong points. They have good linebackers and a good D-line

We traded size for speed on the edges. The pass rush improved, but the run D tanked. We could really use a Wes Horton type right now.

All I'm saying is, it seemed to become a problem as soon as Washongton took over as DC.

Well I think Washington is and has been in over his head.  When Ron took over last year we should of brought in a new guy this year.

But we don’t have the bodies upfront we use to back when McD was DC.  We got pass rushers

Idk man, we have a lot if big bodies up front, especially the middle, and we have since McD left.  It seems to be more of a philosophical/scheme issue, imo.

McD had one of the top 3 run stuffing monster DTs in the business and better run stopping DEs.

I mean we have depth on the DL.  We got pass rushers.  We defiantly made an effort in acquiring talent and altered scheme to get to the QB...and that part shows.

But it isn’t a coincidence to me that we were a top 5 run stopping D the 3 years before Star left....and then have been getting gashed ever since.  He also helped Luke IMO.  I mean Luke is fine either way.  But the combo of Star/KK....was essential to clogging things up.  Butler/McCoy or Love is a pretty big talent drop off IMO

true, but I thought when we signed Poe there were stats posted here showing Poe actually graded out better across the board than Star, fwiw.  I mean Poe is a lit bigger, but yeah, maybe it's no coincidence things fell off when Star left, but I really think we still have the personnel for it, it just seems we lack discipline in run fits.

I'm a big stats guy but sometimes stats are just flat out misleading.

As for Star's value, just look at what happened to our defensive rankings when he left and what happened to the Bill's defensive rankings when he arrived. We fell off and they surged.

well, and the fact Leslie Frazier is a better DC than Eric Washington.   His teams historically have been top 10 defenses as a coordinator.

Washington isn’t bringing much to the table IMO.

Rivera's old school mentality hurts here.  On some levels, yes football is still very much won in the trenches, stronger/tougher guy wins, etc.  But run games and blocking schemes have advanced and gotten more creative with more opened up and spread out offenses. Not exactly Ron's strong suit to scheme to stop creativity when our offense's version of creative is a reverse every now and then.

    • Nope Still missing it. Let's try this a different way... You have two quarterbacks from schools that ran the same kind of offense - maybe even two from the same school - on a given team (not necessarily the Panthers). One is designated the starter while the other is named the backup. Why?
    • yeah, pretty sure boss.....when things match and fit in the NFL.....the results then show it.  and when they don't, well, the results show that as well.  Bryce doesn't fit.   *but I get why late season and wants to argue with everyone Mr. Scot has also turned into a please don't talk to me about stats guy as well.  Given, the stats that reflect offensive productivity work against all your present arguments.
    • Yeeeah...stats and rankings have zero to do with a discussion of scheme and skill set match. Maybe look up definitions of style vs ability and see if that helps. At this point, you've basically had three different people explain to you where you're wrong, but rather than addressing any of those statements, you're just resorting to straight deflection.  You don't get it. Either that or you're acting like you don't get it so that you can avoid the discussion because it's not going well for you. (that wouldn't surprise me either) 😄 Sme result either way, I suppose.
