Brissett: Coach Reich sat me to protect me from myself

Jacoby Brissett wanted to play last Sunday. It wasn’t his decision.

Colts coach Frank Reich made the call to sit his starting quarterback after watching Friday’s practice tape, determining Brissett was only roughly 80 percent.

The Colts didn’t want to risk Brissett’s long-term health. Brissett, who played through a torn ligament in his thumb in 2016, figured he could tough it out.

“I felt like I was getting better each day,” Brissett said, via Joel Erickson of the Indianapolis Star. “It was a coach’s decision. He made the decision that he thought was best for myself and for the team. It’s his job, I guess, to protect myself from myself.”

So you’re saying 20 something star athletes who have largely only ever experienced success in their short lives and overcome long odds to be in the NFL might not have the best perspective or be the best decision makers on their own health and whether they should play, and older more experienced authority figures should step in to temper their natural throw caution to the wind enthusiasm?

Thats just crazy talk.

Let me get this straight:

You mean the QB should not be the person who makes the decision, even though the coach feels that QB is his best chance to keep his job?

Scot been on the wacky weed today.  A coach that knows his QB can't throw it 30 yards would never risk that player's career by playing him in NFL games.

I wonder if this issue was that RR could not tell Cam "no" or that RR was looking for excuses to tell Cam "yes."

I do hope this sets a precedent, I absolutely do. As others had said in this thread, young bravado often trumps logical thinking and their own wellbeing long term.

But the main reason I hopes this sets a precedent, Cam isn't the first star player to play while hurt, in this sport or others, and coaches often have to play these players because of their jobs. Not excusing Ron, or any of these coaches, but it's a terrible cycle.

People have pointed out that Rivera had no trouble sitting Kuechly in the past. And at the end of the Titans game he told McCaffrey to sit down.

(no, it's not because of that)

Yet Newton was trotted out on more than one occasion when he probably shouldn't have been.

    • It's crazy with how much winning was going on when we had a little cool off period that we're still just a couple games out of 6th. Moussa is getting better every week and Coby is getting comfortable. Would be nice to get to 6 but I think this team is a lot more stacked than the last couple play ins. I can't remember the exact rules but if you're 7th seed and win the first game I think you automatically move on and don't have to play the second game?
    • I think it was a thing for sure. Panthers weren’t too many people’s first choice. Or 5th choice.  2022 and 2023… coaches fired mid season. Consecutive years. You want any of that?  He has definitely overseen a rehab of how the Panthers are perceived. Because we are a place that is seen as up and coming. And just the little thing of he accommodated Theilen so graciously, that gets noticed. It all adds up. Dan is doing a lot of things right, probably most things.  Needs a good draft.
    • K, I think that is dumb, but you do you. I didn't find anything online that made him out to be a dislikable person. I am certain the Panthers would have cared so much if they lost your fandom if they hired Sean Payton. But bet you would have come crawling back if Sean lead us to a Super Bowl victory or Golden leads UNC to a champion ship. It is easy to say you are gonna leave a team if the hire someone you dislike when the chips are down. But people like you tend to come crawling back once the team finds success.
