Kyle Allen more than holding his own with other 2018 drafted QBs

It’s obvious this team didn’t have much faith in him to begin with.

Whether that's true or not has no bearing on the current circumstances. He's on the field now, and if he performs well enough to keep the job, he ought to keep playing.

My opinion is that he has played well enough to stay on the field. I think the team would be foolish if they didn't see that he has earned closer inspection.

I think we will know a lot more by the end of the season.  Thats 7 more games to evaluate him.

Sure, but you have to admire a guy that steps up when you shout out, "The pilot's out and this plane is crashing, can anyone help us?"

The Kid could have panicked. Grace under pressure is a powerful tool.

If you have followed along with us on Twitter today, you’ll see where I stand on Newton. But people tend to forget how bad it was early on in year 2 for Cam:

You're really digging deep on this.

First of all not even mentioning the fact you're trying to compare the leeway a first overall pick will get versus an undrafted backup, Allen is essentially a rookie this year. Newton shattered all kinds of passing records his rookie year. We're barely completing a handful of 25+ passing plays a game right now.

If you want to say take a wait and see approach just say that. But this nonsense just makes your takes not even worth reading.

Don't come back when Allen becomes starter full time. Just go pull for another team!

Then don’t read my takes. That’s perfectly ok. The point of this: to remind people how hard it can be on the QB early in their career. This was not an “convenience“ stat. The entire point was to underscore how far he had come in the second half of that season, while feeding that momentum into a 2013 playoff run.

And yes, I tossed it into the Kyle Allen thread to provide some context. If you want to say that it’s irrelevant because he put up record numbers in yr one, that’s fine. I found it even more compelling that he put up record numbers and came back down to earth so fast, only to rise back up and lead the team to 3 straight division titles. I don’t think Kyle Allen is capable of all of that, but I do use it as a reminder that young quarterbacks have really bad performances at times. Even the legends.

Let’s just go ahead and get this out there: Kyle’s ceiling is well below Cam Newton’s. But I also don’t think it’s time to stop doing homework on the guy. A lot of people think this is about as good as he gets, no matter what. I find that to be lazy analysis.

It wouldn't be so bad if the Kyle Allen supporters on this forum didn't have some kind of agenda on here. Like OP for instance changed his name from mvp cam to mvp McCaffrey and then started this constant bashing of cam. Then another clown on here saying Cam's time is over and nothing could be finer.

Not everyone has an agenda but theirs are pretty clear. Thankfully they're also in the minority of huddlers

Newton threw for just under 4k yards on 2012.

Allen is on pace to throw for maybe 3,000 or so yards. And that's if we actually start connecting on deep passes consistently the rest of the season.

It's too early to know Allen's ceiling. He's only 23. Again he is basically a rookie. The unfortunate aspect of it all is that Allen immediately took the reins after Cam and now both he and Cam are going to be compared endlessly for at least the next year until we truly know what we have in Kyle. In that regard I sympathize with Kyle. It has not been a great situation to have been thrown into.

Anyone who thinks his career is already written is not worth conversing with. That doesn't mean we ignore what's in front of us for the time being. We have to clean up the turnovers, and we have to start feeding our speed guys deep. There are things to be optimistic about right now all things considered. But if we fail to string together some wins to finish the season there will be very little in the way of goodwill from the fans next season and that's just the nature of sports. Especially for a franchise like the Panthers that has still yet to claim that elusive back to back winning seasons goal.

Sorry to break it to you but a UDFA will never get the same leeway as a first round pick, and they shouldn’t. UDFA need to go above and beyond and Allen hasn’t done that. The chances a UDFA turns out to be a franchise QB are slim to none

Allen has gone above and beyond what a UDFA backup QB is expected to do... which is flame out and totally suck.

That does not mean he is going to be a "franchise QB" by any means.  But it is dumb and unrealistic to pretend that because he isn't the second coming of Cam Newton he is a massive failure.

I'm happy we seem to have a solid backup at the least.

I get that most people would love for Allen to be the heir apparent if Cam departs, but when your have to resort to mental gymnastics in order to make him appear more than he has displayed, that's usually a sign that deep down in your heart that you know what you're saying is based on your desire as opposed to reality.

Allen is not playing by himself, and---I'm just gonna say it---our team had to work harder for wins not because of Allen, but in spite of Allen. And his turnovers finally got the better of us against a team that usually is lights out on offense. In other words, your can't make mistakes against offensive powerhouses and expect to win. Just the mere fact that we were in the game until the end says more about our imperfect defense still keeping us in a position to win than it does about Allen putting us into a position to tie after he buried us with turnovers.

Allen is going to have to develop pocket awareness, make way better decisions and throw a more accurate long ball before I'm giving him any credence as anything more than a somewhat capable backup.
